On April 7, GAC Aion and Didi Autonomous Driving announced that their joint venture, Guangzhou Andi Technology Co., Ltd., has been approved for industrial and commercial licenses, and the first batch of L4 models jointly designed and built by the two parties are planned to be mass-produced in 2025 to access the huge mobility market. This means that L4 autonomous driving has stepped out of the "comfort zone" and begun to enter a new stage of commercialization.

According to the International Society of Automotive Engineers, automatic driving is divided into five levels from L0 to L5 according to the degree of intelligence, and the higher the standard value, the higher the automation level. Level 4 refers to a high degree of automation, and the vehicle can drive autonomously in most road and traffic conditions without human intervention, which is also considered to be the future trend of vehicle electrification and intelligence.

According to incomplete statistics, there are about 45 companies in mainland China that are engaged in research and development related to L4 autonomous driving technology, including Internet giants such as Baidu and Didi, as well as start-up technology companies such as Pony.ai and WeRide. Due to multiple technical, regulatory, and ethical obstacles, despite the huge investment in R&D in recent years, there has been a lack of substantial progress in the commercialization of L4 autonomous driving.

From the perspective of business model, L4 autonomous driving can be broadly divided into two categories: for individual consumers (To C) and for enterprises (To B). To C is to provide daily travel services directly to urban residents, but it has been unstable due to the limited scale.

In contrast, the B-end shared travel field is more friendly to the development of L4 autonomous driving. In environments with relatively simple road conditions such as closed parks and highways, the existing technologies have performed well in terms of safety and stability, with better operation time and efficiency than human drivers, more prominent cost performance, and broader commercialization prospects.

This time, GAC Aion and Didi joined forces to seize this opportunity and take the B-end as a way to break the game, and completed the commercialization of L4 autonomous driving for the first time.

Tianyancha shows that Guangzhou Andi Technology Co., Ltd. has a registered capital of 420 million yuan, which is jointly held by GAC Aion New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. and Didi's affiliated company Beijing Track Technology Co., Ltd. Among them, GAC Aion holds 50% of the shares, Beijing Track Technology holds 50% of the shares, the chairman is Zhang Xiong, deputy general manager of GAC Aion, and the general manager is Meng Xing, COO of Didi Autonomous Driving.

It is understood that the first L4 autonomous driving model jointly created by the two parties, Robotaxi (driverless taxi), is positioned as a crossover SUV, based on GAC Aion's AEP3.0 high-end pure electric exclusive platform, Xingling's high-end electronic and electrical architecture, equipped with a full set of fully unmanned software and hardware technology solutions for Didi autonomous driving, a safety redundancy system and the latest generation of cockpit entertainment system for unmanned travel services. The car is scheduled to be mass-produced in 2024, and will be launched in batches according to the scale of 10,000 units in the future, and will be connected to the Didi Chuxing network in the form of hybrid dispatch to provide users with driverless travel services.

Industry insiders believe that the cooperation model of "autonomous driving company + new energy vehicle company" between the two sides can give full play to their respective advantages in technology research and development, manufacturing, commercial operation, etc., establish a L4 unmanned driving business ecosystem on the B side, and continuously cultivate profit prospects while promoting continuous technology iteration and cost optimization.

With the first L4 commercial landing of Andi Technology, GAC Aion has also become the first car company to enter the L4 unmanned driving practical operation stage, building the world's first "technology + intelligent manufacturing + operation" L4 business ecological closed loop. In the field of private travel, GAC Aion has also established in-depth cooperation with the international chip giant NVIDIA, and will take the lead in mass production of L4 models, making efforts on the BC end to make unmanned driving technology close to ordinary consumers.
