Brazil's new car sales in March: BYD remained in the top 10, Chery doubled its sales, and Fiat ranked first

In March 2024, new light vehicle sales in Brazil decreased by 5.7% year-on-year, with 175,982 new vehicles sold. Although sales fell, the performance was not too bad. This is mainly due to the fact that in March 2023, sales surged by 38.3% compared to the same period in 2022. Moreover, sales are much better than in January and February. Sales in January 2024 were 152,062 units, compared to 155,283 units in February. On a year-on-year basis, sales grew by more than 10% in the first three months. The year-on-year increase was 10.7%, with sales exceeding 480,000 units to 483,327 units.

Chinese car brands are performing steadily in the South American country. There is one Chinese brand in the top 10 list and three in the top 20 list. BYD is firmly in 10th place, ranking the same as in February. Sales reached 6,213 units, up 1,841.6% year-on-year. Seagull, Dolphin and Song PLUS are BYD's main sales force:

  • The BYD Seagull ranked 25th with 2,469 units sold
  • The BYD Seagull ranked 34th with 1,707 units sold
  • BYD Song PLUS ranked 37th, with sales of 1,450 units, up 607.3% year-on-year
  • The BYD Seal ranked 63rd, with 350 units sold
  • The BYD Yuan PLUS ranked 74th, with 224 units sold

Chery followed BYD in 11th place. Sales volume was 4,829 units, a year-on-year increase of 187.6%. Sales nearly tripled compared to the same period last year. Chery's main models are three Tiggo models:

  • The Tiggo 5X ranked 26th with sales of 2,464 units, up 414.4% year-on-year
  • The Tiggo 7 ranked 32nd, with sales of 1,745 units, up 267.4% year-on-year
  • The Tiggo 8 ranked 57th, with sales of 615 units, down 5.8% year-on-year

Great Wall is also doing very well. It ranked 16th with 1,705 units sold. The ranking is the same as in February. Haval H6 and Ora 03 are the main sales force of Great Wall:

  • The Haval H6 ranked 43rd with 1,097 units sold
  • Ora Good Cat ranked 58th with 608 units sold

The 11 best-selling brands are ranked exactly the same as in February. Volkswagen and Fiat are the only brands to sell more than 30,000 units. Fiat fell 12.3% year-on-year. However, it still held the championship position with sales of 36,336 units. The market share is 20.6%.

Volkswagen performed well, bucking the trend with a growth of 31.6%. The increase is close to one-third. Volkswagen was the only one of the top seven brands to record growth. The sales volume was 30,779 units, and the market share rose to 17.5%. For reference, Volkswagen's market share was 14.6% in January and 15.4% in February.

Chevrolet is still in third place. However, sales plummeted by 28.5%. The decline is nearly 30%. Sales volume of 21,456 units. The champions, runners-up and runners-up together held a total market share of 50.3%. Three brands account for half of the country. While most brands are falling, Nissan is doing well. This represents a year-on-year increase of 15.4%.

In terms of models, the familiar Volkswagen Polo performed well with a year-on-year increase of 45.7%. With 11,943 units sold, it topped the list. The Volkswagen Polo is the only model that has sold more than 10,000 units. The ranking has risen by 1 position compared to February.

The Fiat Strada was squeezed into second place. The year-on-year increase was 0.6%, and the sales volume was flat compared to the same period last year. Chevrolet's new Corvoz jumped from eighth place in February to third place. The familiar Volkswagen Tange and Nissan Jinke are also in the top 10.
