On December 9, the 2019 BWF Annual Awards were announced, and Huang Yaqiong, a badminton player from Zhejiang, won the title of Best Female Athlete again. She became the first player in BWF history to win the Female Athlete of the Year award for consecutive years.
Last year, the host Chinese team won two major awards: Huang Yaqiong, the main player of the Chinese badminton team in mixed doubles, was named the best female athlete of the year, and men's doubles newcomers Han Chengkai/Zhou Haodong were named the most promising athlete of the year. This year, the Chinese badminton team still won two awards, Huang Yaqiong won the best female athlete of the year, and Qu Zimo won the best male athlete with disabilities of the year.
Huang Yaqiong deserves to be the best female athlete in the second row, and she and Zheng Siwei remain ranked No. 1 in the mixed doubles rankings, winning six heavyweight world titles, including the World Championships. Although Zheng Siwei lost to Japan's Kento Momota in the Best Male Athlete category, Huang Yaqiong won the Best Female Athlete award for the second time after last year.
"I was looking forward to it last year, and I thought that the results were still good, but the other female players nominated this year also performed very well, so I didn't expect to get it this year. Huang Yaqiong said in an interview after winning the award that winning the best re-award is an affirmation of her own achievements, and at the same time, she is "surprised and delighted".
Huang Yaqiong, a native of Xiachuan Town, Qujiang District, Quzhou, Zhejiang, began to learn badminton at the age of 7 and was selected for the national team at the age of 18. At the 2018 World Badminton Championships, she won the mixed doubles title, becoming the first female world champion in Quzhou. In December 2018, she was named the International Badminton Federation (BWF) Female Athlete of the Year. In March 2019, the "IELTS Pair" of Huang Yaqiong and Zheng Siwei won the 2019 All England Mixed Doubles Championship, becoming the first pair of BWF players to exceed 110,000 points, setting a new world record.
