On April 5, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration announced a total of 25 typical cases of forest fires from January to February 2024, including 8 types of cases caused by sacrificial fire, agricultural fire, power failure, fireworks, wild smoking, illegal construction operations, illegal hunting, and external fires, as follows:

1. Forest fires caused by sacrificial fires (4 cases)

(1) Forest fire in Gantian Town, Leye County, Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. On January 1, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Sihe Village, Gantian Town, Leye County, Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 0.6 hectares. After investigation, the fire was caused by the fire used by local villagers for sacrifice. At present, the perpetrator has been sentenced by the local court to one year in prison, suspended for one year.

(2) Forest fire in Goujiang Town, Banzhou District, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. On February 13, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Yiyuan Village, Goujiang Town, Banzhou District, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, and the fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 11.5 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by sacrificial fire. (3) Forest fire in Maduqiao Township, Qidong County, Hengyang City, Hunan Province. On February 19, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Maduqiao Village, Maduqiao Township, Qidong County, Hengyang City, Hunan Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 20. The burned area is about 18.9 hectares. The fire was caused by a fire used by local villagers to worship their ancestors. At present, the suspect has been controlled by the local public security organ, and the case is being further handled.

(4) Forest fire in Ninggu Town, Xixiu District, Anshun City, Guizhou Province. On February 20, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Mushanbao Village, Ninggu Town, Xixiu District, Anshun City, Guizhou Province. The burned area is about 28.6 hectares. The fire was caused by sacrificial fire. At present, the suspect has been controlled by the local public security organ, and the case is being further handled.

2. Forest fires caused by agricultural fires (6 cases)

(1) Forest fire in Yachi Town, Qixingguan District, Bijie City, Guizhou Province. On February 18, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Yinhe Community, Yachi Town, Qixingguan District, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 20. The burned area is about 56.8 hectares. After investigation, the fire was caused by agricultural fire. The suspect has been criminally detained by the local public security organ in accordance with the law, and the case is being further handled.

(2) Forest fire in Kedu Town, Pingtang County, Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. On February 18, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Tongxing Village, Kedu Town, Pingtang County, Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou Province, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 5.23 hectares. After the fire broke out, law enforcement officers arrested the perpetrator of the fire caused by agricultural fire on the spot, and the case is being further handled. Those responsible on the ground have been held accountable.

(3) Forest fire in Tanchang Street, Renhuai City, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. On February 18, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Zhangbai Community, Tanchang Street, Renhuai City, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 19. The burned area is about 18.9 hectares. The fire was caused by agricultural fire. At present, the suspect has been controlled by the public security organs, and the case is being further handled. An investigation team has been set up and is being held accountable.

(4) Forest fire in Bide Town, Shuicheng District, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province. On February 19, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Qixin Village, Bide Town, Shuicheng District, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 20. The burned area is about 14.4 hectares. The fire was caused by local villagers burning grass roots in their fields. At present, the suspect has been controlled by the local public security organ, and the case is being further handled. Those responsible on the ground have been held accountable.

(5) Forest fire in Xiangyang Town, Tian'e County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. On February 20, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Xiangyang Town, Tian'e County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the open fire was extinguished on February 21. The burned area is about 33 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by the villagers burning weeds in the cultivated land. At present, the suspect has been approved for arrest by the local procuratorate, and the case is being further handled.

(6) Forest fire in Pingshan Town, Hezhang County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province. On February 20, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Pingshan Community, Pingshan Town, Hezhang County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 21. The burned area is about 20 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by agricultural fire. At present, the suspect has been released on bail pending trial, and the case is being further handled.

3. Forest fires caused by power failures (5 cases)

(1) Forest fire in Luofu Town, Nandan County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. On February 19, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Luogen Village, Luofu Town, Nandan County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 8.99 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by a high-voltage line failure, and the relevant investigation is underway.

(2) Forest fire in Wanshui Township, Linwu County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province. On February 19, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Yandong Village, Wanshui Township, Linwu County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 1.3 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the high-voltage line, and the relevant investigation is underway.

(3) Forest fire in Gaoyang Town, Wangcang County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province. On February 19, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Gaoyang Town, Wangcang County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 0.67 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by the fault of the transmission and distribution line, and the relevant investigation work is underway.

(4) Forest fire in Youping Township, Leye County, Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. On February 21, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Daxin Village, Youping Township, Leye County, Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the open fire was extinguished on February 23. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by friction and ignition of the power high-voltage line under the influence of windy weather, and the relevant investigation is underway.

(5) Forest fire in Panlian Town, Miyi County, Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. On February 28, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Shuitang Village, Panlian Town, Miyi County, Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 29. The burned area is about 18.4 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the wire, and the relevant investigation is underway.

4. Forest fires caused by fireworks (3 cases)

(1) Forest fire in Donghai Town, Chengxiang District, Putian City, Fujian Province. On February 12, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Pingyang Village, Donghai Town, Chengxiang District, Putian City, Fujian Province, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 1 hectare. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by a child in the town who set off fireworks and firecrackers. Local law enforcement has educated their guardians in criticism. The investigation is ongoing.

(2) Forest fire in Zhoujiang Town, Wuhua County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. On February 12, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Liyang Village, Zhoujiang Town, Wuhua County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 12.9 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by three school students (minors) in Liyang Village, the town. The local law enforcement department intends to impose a maximum punishment on the guardian of the perpetrator, requiring him to compensate (compensate) for the cost of fighting the fire and restoring the greenery. The investigation is ongoing.

(3) Forest fire in Jiaokui Street, Yiliang County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province. On February 18, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Jiaokui Street, Yiliang County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, and the open fire was extinguished on February 19. The burned area is about 46 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by fireworks and firecrackers. At present, the suspect has been controlled by the local public security organ, and the case is being further handled.

5. Forest fires caused by smoking in the wild (3 cases)

(1) Forest fire in Yuhe Town, Wudu District, Longnan City, Gansu Province. On January 9, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Miaoba Village, Yuhe Town, Wudu District, Longnan City, Gansu Province, and the open fire was extinguished on January 11. The burned area is about 0.62 hectares. After investigation, the fire was caused by local villagers who randomly discarded cigarette butts when collecting medicine in the field. At present, the suspect has been controlled by the public security organs, and the relevant cases are being further investigated.

(2) Forest fire in Shibi Town, Ninghua County, Sanming City, Fujian Province. On February 17, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Guankeng Village, Shibi Town, Ninghua County, Sanming City, Fujian Province, and the open fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 15.9 hectares. After investigation, the fire was caused by smoking in the wild. The suspect was criminally detained by the local public security organ in accordance with the law on suspicion of the crime of arson, and the case is being further handled.

(3) Forest fire in the Limushan Branch of the Tropical Rainforest National Park in Hainan Province. On February 29, 2024, a forest fire broke out at the Xinwei Management Station of the Limushan Branch of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Administration, and the fire was extinguished on the same day. The burned area is about 0.13 hectares. After preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by local villagers discarding cigarette butts at will. At present, the local public security organ has given the perpetrator 10 days of administrative detention and a fine of 500 yuan.

6. Forest fires caused by illegal construction operations (2 cases)

(1) Forest fire in Songzong Town, Bomi County, Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region. On January 27, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Dongya Village, Songzong Town, Bomi County, Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region, and the open fire was extinguished on January 29. The fire was caused by an open flame caused by a villager's illegal cutting operation, which was extinguished by itself and left, and then re-ignited. At present, the local public security organs have imposed a penalty of 10 days of administrative detention on the perpetrators.

(2) Forest fire in Huanglianguan Town, Xichang City, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan. On February 5, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Luma Village, Huanglianguan Town, Xichang City, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, and the open fire was extinguished on February 6. The burned area is about 31 hectares. The fire was caused by a local combustible clean-up fire. At present, the local Commission for Discipline Inspection has intervened in the investigation and will investigate the responsibility of relevant personnel in accordance with regulations and discipline.

7. Forest fires caused by illegal hunting (1 case)

Forest fire in Qiaochong Town, Lufeng City, Shanwei City, Guangdong Province. On January 16, 2024, a forest fire broke out in Xibi Village, Qiaochong Town, Lufeng City, Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, and the open fire was extinguished on January 17. The burned area is about 31.2 hectares. The fire was caused by man-made fire. At present, the local procuratorate has approved the arrest of the criminal suspect on suspicion of illegal hunting and fire, and the case is being further handled.

8. Forest fires caused by external fires (1 case)

Forest fire in Longyin Town, Pu'an County, Qianxian Prefecture, Guizhou Province. On February 19, 2024, a wildfire broke out in Huashui Village, Huaga Township, Shuicheng District, Liupanshui City, and then spread to the nearby area of Pu'an Longyin Town, Qianxinan Prefecture. On February 21, the Hongqi community in Longyin Town, Pu'an County organized firefighting. The fire was extinguished on 21 February. The burned area is about 30.65 hectares. At present, the suspect has been summoned by the public security organs and is under investigation, and the case is being further handled.
