Biodiversity is an important foundation for human survival and development, and protecting biodiversity is to enhance human well-being. The mainland is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, and in recent years, Haidian District has continuously enhanced its biodiversity conservation and governance capacity on the basis of consolidating the existing conservation achievements.

The reporter learned from the Haidian District Landscaping Bureau and the Haidian District Wetland and Wildlife Conservation and Management Center that through the extensive collection of wildlife observation records in the whole district, and the final identification of zoology and botany experts from Beijing Normal University and the Chinese Academy of Forestry, Haidian District officially released the "List of Terrestrial Wild Animals in Haidian District, Beijing (2023)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Animal List") and the "List of Wild Plants in Haidian District, Beijing (2023)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Plant List"). 59 species of terrestrial wild animals and 5 species of terrestrial wild plants were added to the list.
The new edition of the "Animal Catalogue" includes a total of 462 species of terrestrial wild animals in 33 orders, 99 families and 362 species, including 397 species of birds of 22 orders, 70 families and 397 species of birds (accounting for 77% of the bird records in Beijing), 42 species of mammals of 7 orders, 18 families, and 23 species of amphibians and reptiles of 4 orders, 11 families.

Compared with the list released in 2022, 59 new species of wild animals have been added, among which the orange-winged thrush and the red-headed long-tailed are newly recorded bird species in Beijing.

There are 7 species of birds that have not yet been included in the Beijing Terrestrial Wildlife List (2023): orange-winged thrush, red-headed long-tailed, Chinese long-tailed finch, proto-pigeon, Chinese cuckoo, Chinese short-toed lark, and light yellow-rumped willow warbler.

The new edition of the Plant List includes 752 species of wild plants in 121 families, 429 genera and 121 families. Among them, there are four new national second-class protected wild plants: licorice, and 4 species of key protected wild plants in Beijing: Orchid multiphylla, Bamboo, Baozhu grass and Elm. chinensis. So far, 5 species of national second-class protected wild plants have been recorded in Haidian District: big-leaved beech, barberry, wild soybean, soft jujube kiwifruit, licorice, and 18 species of key protected wild plants in Beijing.

As an important part of the natural ecosystem, the population number and species changes of wild animals and plants are an important basis for assessing the ecosystem and monitoring the ecological quality. The District Landscaping Bureau and the Haidian District Wetland and Wildlife Conservation and Management Center will always be guided by the construction of a national forest city, and continue to improve the living environment of wild animals and plants by improving the quality of forests in mountainous areas, enhancing the ecological functions of wetlands, and building large-scale ecological plates.
In recent years, Haidian District has carried out the investigation and monitoring of wild animal and plant resources, established a basic database of wild animals and plants in Haidian District, and continued to carry out the monitoring of wild animals in Haidian District, with a total of 82 infrared cameras deployed in the Daxishan area. In 2023, a total of 1,015 incidents of rescue and disposal of wild animals were reported, covering 29 towns and towns in Haidian District, with 1,808 people dispatched, 26,062 kilometers traveled, and 841 wild animals rescued and disposed of. Continue to carry out wildlife disease epidemic monitoring and wildlife epidemic prevention and quarantine. The investigation of the in-situ protection points of key protected wild plants has been carried out, and the types, quantities, morphological characteristics, population size, habitat characteristics and other resources of key protected plants in Haidian have been preliminarily grasped. At the same time, a team of experts was organized to carry out field inspections of key protected plants, and in accordance with relevant requirements, the protection and management mechanism and management strategy of important wild plants in Haidian District were formulated.
At the same time, Haidian District has also carried out online and offline scientific popularization activities on biodiversity through multiple channels. Relying on the International Wildlife Conservation Day, Bird Loving Week, June Five-Year Environment Day, International Day for Biological Diversity, etc., to carry out science popularization activities. Through various forms of publicity, we will actively disseminate conservation concepts and knowledge, and raise the awareness of the whole society on the protection of wild animals and plants.
