Recently, I met Director Qu Miao from the Department of Neurology on a talk show, he is in his 40s and has been practicing medicine for more than 20 years. When the host asked him which story he wanted to share with everyone the most since he started his medical career, Qu Miao paused for a moment and said, "Then let's start with thinking about human nature." ”

I have also talked about the need to be a physician not only to have the ability to think clinically, but also to reflect on human nature. No one disputes the first ability, because it is the doctor's housekeeping skill. And for the second ability, like a tiny spark that has not yet converged into a flame, although there is no direct opposition, there are not many supporters.

Approaching a problem from a technical perspective alone is often unsolvable

The word human nature encompasses a lot and is also very complex, it is the instinct and nature of human beings, which are innate. Human nature has both positive sides, such as kindness, friendliness, empathy, etc., and negative sides, such as selfishness, jealousy, deception, etc. Therefore, under the influence of different social environments, cultural backgrounds and personal experiences, human nature makes people's behaviors manifest differently. Qu Miao gave two examples:

A patient in his 40s with brainstem infarction had stabilized his vital signs and condition after being put on a ventilator, and the doctor was still confident in the treatment. However, the patient's lover insisted on removing the endotracheal intubation, and despite the doctor's hard persuasion, the patient's lover removed the patient's endotracheal intubation while the doctor videotaped the whole process, and the patient soon passed away.

Another patient, who is in his 70s and has suffered from various chronic diseases in the past, and this time he has a cerebrovascular disease, in the doctor's opinion, the possibility of the patient being treated is very small, and the patient has no medical insurance, and the medical expenses are even worse for the family who is not wealthy. But the patient's son did not hesitate to borrow money to get the doctor to treat his mother with the best medicine.

A month later, the patient died of severe illness. To the doctor's surprise, the patient's son did not become hysterical about the death of his mother, but calmly accepted the result. Afterwards, the doctor asked the patient's son why he did his best at all costs when he knew that the treatment would not turn his mother around? The patient's son said, "As long as my mother lives for one day, I will still have my mother's child." ”

Similar cases are not uncommon in clinical practice. It can be said that doctors, a profession that pays attention to people's pain and is often entangled on the verge of death, can be said to be unsolvable many times if the problem is discussed from a technical point of view, which is also the confusion of many practitioners in their careers.

Exploring the human psyche is also about understanding the nature of human nature

The profession of a doctor deals with people every day, and it should be a profession that can be most thoughtful about human nature. However, the admiration of technology in modern medicine allows doctors to spend their time, energy, and mind on their diseases, and have no time to think more about human nature. Qu Miao is able to have more sensitivity and attention to the topic of human nature, which may have something to do with his experience.

At the beginning of Qu Miao's medical studies, that is, more than 20 years ago, he was admitted to the psychological counselor examination, and once a classmate wanted him to accompany him to Zhongguancun to buy a computer. He asked the student if he was prepared for both. The classmate replied that he didn't think about it, he could do anything. Qu Miao kindly reminded him to make some plans, so as not to be unsatisfactory when he bought it, and after two days he thought about it, he would accompany him. But two days later, Qu Miao heard the news of the classmate's suicide.

This incident hit Qu Miao very hard, maybe this classmate knew that he had a background as a psychological counselor, and asking him to accompany him to buy a computer may be just an excuse, the real purpose is to find a helper. Since then, Qu Miao has left a "sequelae" for patients - slowness. He wants to understand the patient's situation in more detail, both physical and psychological. The human body and mind are always intertwined. People with physical diseases will be involved in their psychology without exception. Conversely, mental illness can also present with somatic symptoms. So strictly speaking, physical illness and mental illness are the relationship between you and me, and I and you. Exploring the human psyche is also about understanding the nature of human nature.

Modern medicine advocates precision, so that each disease has an exclusive treatment plan, a uniform team of doctors, and tall diagnostic equipment, lest the disease be disturbed by irrelevant factors. But people are accustomed to living in their own psychological comfort zone, in which people are kind, emotional, and can help each other, and if the comfort zone is broken, people's temperament will also change dramatically, and even many excellent qualities will be torn apart. One of the main culprits that upset this balance may be disease. It's not a disease problem, it's human nature.

Human nature is interconnected, and human weaknesses are common to everyone. Doctors who do not understand human nature are either suspicious of their carefully polished scientific diagnosis and treatment plans, or think that patients are "crazy". On the contrary, once doctors no longer see only physical diseases, but people who are physically and mentally complete, there will be a qualitative leap in the perspective of doctors looking at medicine and career.

A good doctor is both a physician and a philosopher

Doctors cannot interpret human nature as if it were a purely scientific question, especially when dealing with patients and their families. If doctors always take the rationality and science of medicine as a universal guide to the practice of medicine, they may misjudge the various behaviors of patients and the various manifestations of family members. Some physical diseases are curable, and many are incurable. Doctors can devote a lot of effort to treating physical ailments, but this is certainly not the only purpose of doctors. Doctors also need to spend wisdom in managing the relationship between patients and their families and trying to meet their needs. Wisdom is the sublimation of knowledge, and doctors should not only learn knowledge, but also constantly reflect and perceive.

Qu Miao used her spare time to study a degree in philosophy. Many people say that a good doctor is both a medical scientist and a philosopher. The word philosophy is derived from the ancient Greek word for the love of wisdom. Philosophy is the study of the nature and meaning of the world, life, and human existence, and philosophy can help us interpret human nature. It is impossible for every doctor to become a philosopher, but doctors should have some philosophical thinking, which will allow them to take fewer detours and learn wisdom in the profession of dealing with human suffering and life and death.

In "Mozi and Love", it is said: "Those who love others will be loved, and those who benefit others will benefit them...... Medicine is a science that heals the body and mind. To heal the heart, we must see each other's hearts and compare hearts to hearts. There is always a good side to human nature. Doctors should see the good side of patients and their families, embrace kindness with kindness, and inspire love with love. Human nature can motivate each other and influence each other, and from the perspective of each other, sincere and sincere will produce unexpected results.

Medicine is the study of human beings, inseparable from human nature. Being able to see a good disease tests the rational ability of the doctor, and whether or not the patient can be optimistic tests the doctor's emotional level. Improving rational ability requires doctors to cultivate clinical thinking and strive for technical excellence, while improving emotional ability requires doctors to constantly reflect on human nature and increase life experience.
