The birth years and teacher-student relationship of some erhu players born before the founding of the People's Republic of China

Looking at modern erhu artists, Jiangnan, especially Wuxi, accounts for a considerable proportion, and new and old artists often have mutual origins. Let's take a look at the birth years and relationships of some artists born before the founding of the People's Republic of China.

  (1) Hua Yanjun (A Bing) (1893-1950), a native of Wuxi.

  (2) Liu Tianhua (1895-1932), a native of Jiangyin, was Liu Bannong's younger brother and Liu Beimao's elder brother.

  (3) Yang Yinliu (1899-1984), a native of Wuxi. I met Ah Bing when I was a child. He is good at a variety of musical instruments, especially the bamboo flute, and has been passed on by Wu Wanqing. (Mei Lanfang, Han Shichang and others were also taught by Wu Wanqing).

  (4) Chu Shizhu (1901-1955), a newcomer in Yixing. Liu Tianhua's eldest disciple. Students include Li Songshou and so on.

  (5) Liu Beimao (1903-1981), a native of Jiangyin, was the younger brother of Liu Bannong and Liu Tianhua. Trained blind musicians such as Gan Bolin and Yan Shaozhang.

  (6) Chen Zhenduo (1904-1999), a native of Linzi, Shandong. Students include Zhang Rui, Chen Chaoru, etc.

  (7) Jiang Fengzhi (1908-1986), a native of Liushu Village, Yixing. Liu Tianhua's disciple. The "Northern Jiang" in "North Jiang Nanlu" refers to Jiang Fengzhi. The students trained include Xiang Zuying, Tang Yubin, Zhang Shao, Wang Guotong and so on. It was Jiang Xunfeng's father. [Author's note: I did not find out where "Houliushu Village" is in Yixing]

  (8) Lu Xiutang (1911-1966), a native of Kunshan. The "Nanlu" of "North Jiang Nanlu" refers to Lu Xiutang. Its students include Wang Yi, Xiang Zuying, etc.

  (9) Wang Yi (1919-2002), a native of Wu County. He is a student of Lu Xiutang.

  (10) Zhang Rui (1920-2016), a native of Kunming, Yunnan. He is a disciple of Liu Tianhua and Chen Zhenduo. Daughter Zhang Zhuoya is a famous composer of the General Political Song and Dance Troupe.

  (11) Li Songshou (1921-2010), a native of Wuxi. When he was a teenager, Li Songshou became acquainted with Ah Bing. He actively advised and participated in the rescue of Ah Bing's "Erquan Reflecting the Moon" and other 6 works, and is one of the characters most closely related to "Erquan Reflecting the Moon".

  (12) Min Jiqian (1923-), a native of Yixing Wanshi. He is a disciple of Liu Tianhua. It was Min Huifen's father.

  (13) Chen Chaoru (1924-), a native of Liangping, Chongqing. He is a disciple of Chen Zhenduo. Chen Chaoru's students include Youde Ma, Min Huifen, Zhou Yaokun, Jiang Jianhua, Song Fei, etc.

  (14) Xiang Zuying (1926-1999), a native of Suzhou. He is a disciple of Lu Xiutang and Jiang Fengzhi.

  (15) Zhang Shao (1927-2015), a native of Wujin. He is a disciple of Yang Yinliu, Chu Shizhu, and Jiang Fengzhi.

  (16) Ma Youde (1930-), a native of Qihe, Shandong. Its students include Chen Yaoxing, Zhu Changyao, Zhou Wei, Ou Jingxing, Bian Liunian, Deng Jiandong, Wang Shaolin, Rui Xiaozhu, Xu Xu, Gao Yang, Chen Jun, Yu Huisheng, Yang Yihe, Qian Zhihe, Xing Liyuan, Gu Huaiyan, etc.

(17) Liu Mingyuan (1931-1996), a Chinese huqin player, was born in Hongqiao District, Tianjin. Soloist of Beijing Film Orchestra, principal soloist of the folk band, captain of the folk band, deputy director and professor of the Instrumental Music Department of the China Conservatory of Music, the fourth director of the China Music Association, and a member of the Jiusan Society.

(18) Lu Rirong, conductor, composer, erhu player. Born in 1933, he joined the literary and artistic work in 1945 and served as the band of the Han Chinese Art Work Troupe in 1950. Later, he was admitted to the Northwest Academy of Arts, where he studied erhu, composition and conducting. After graduating in 1954, he stayed on to teach, serving as an erhu teacher and a folk band conductor. He has successively served as the head of the teaching and research department, the head of the department, and the deputy dean.

  (19) Tang Yubin (1934-2013), Shandong Rong adult. A student of Jiang Fengzhi.

  (20) Jiang Xunfeng (1935-), a native of Yixing. Jiang Fengzhi's son.

(21) Wang Yiqin (1937-2022), born in Jinan City, Shandong Province, member of the Communist Party of China, former principal of the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, vice president of the Erhu Society of the Chinese Musicians Association, national first-class performer, enjoying special allowances from the State Council.

  (22) Xu Jiaode (female) (1938-), a native of Beijing.

  (23) Song Guosheng (1938-), a native of Leting, Hebei. daughter Seinfeld, students include Jin Xuedong, Lin Cong, etc.

  (24) Wang Guotong (1939-), a native of Shandong. He is a student of Chen Zhenduo and Jiang Fengzhi.

(25) An Ruli (1939-2010), born on September 11, 1939 in Yuci, Shanxi, is the third generation of Chinese erhu masters. He was formerly the director of the Instrumental Music Department of the China Conservatory of Music, a professor of the China Conservatory of Music, the president of the Erhu Society of the Chinese Musicians Association, a member of the Chinese Musicians Association, and an expert enjoying special allowances from the State Council.

  (26) Chen Yaoxing (1941-), a frequent acquaintance. He studied under Ma Youde, Gan Tao, Qu Anhua, Cheng Wujia, etc.

  (27) Min Huifen (female) (1945-2014), a native of Wanshi, Yixing. Min Jiqian's eldest daughter. He studied under Yang Yinliu, Cao Anhe, Wang Yi, Lu Xiutang and other famous music teachers.

(28) Liu Changfu, the first erhu player and educator in Chinese mainland to obtain a master's degree, senior professor and master tutor of the Central Conservatory of Music, director of the Advisory Committee of the Erhu Society of the Chinese Musicians Association, vice president of the "Liu Tianhua Research Association" of the Chinese Musicians Association, and honorary president of the Huqin Professional Committee of the China National Orchestra Society. He was awarded the "Lifetime Contribution Award for Folk Music Art" (August 2016) and the "Outstanding Folk Music Educator" (October 2019) at the 8th Chinese Music Forum.

  (29) Jiang Cairu (1945-), a native of Chengdu, Sichuan. He has successively studied under professors such as Jiang Fengzhi, Zhang Shao, Nie Jingyu, and Wang Guotong. Together with Min Huifen, it is called "North Jiang and South Min".

  (30) Zhou Yaokun (1945-), a native of Qingjiang, Jiangxi.

(31) Yang Jiqiang, male, born in February 1949, from Anqing, Anhui Province, is an erhu player. Artistic director of the Frontline Art Troupe of the Political Department of the Nanjing Military Region, former head of the Frontline Song and Dance Troupe of the Nanjing Military Region, a national first-class performer, enjoying the "special government allowance" of the State Council, and a third-level professional and technical level.

  The list goes on and on, and there are even more artists who were born after the founding of the People's Republic of China and are now active on the Chinese erhu art stage, and the development of folk music is gratifying.
