On April 5, according to foreign media reports, the government of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein announced that it would implement a far-reaching information technology reform program.

Under the plan, it is expected that about 30,000 state government computing devices will be converted from Microsoft's Windows and Office 365 to open source software platforms such as Linux and LibreOffice.

The core objectives of this reform are significant reductions in economic costs and enhanced data protection. By replacing with an open-source solution, the state government will significantly reduce the licensing fees associated with Microsoft products.

At the same time, the state governments have pledged to strictly adhere to data protection principles to ensure that personal data does not flow out of the EU or EEA, thereby strengthening data sovereignty.

In addition, the state government's support for the Open Document Format (ODF) will continue to ensure compatibility with other platforms and applications, and to ensure unimpeded information sharing.

Although there is no direct open source alternative to specific Microsoft products, such as Active Directory, in the current technology environment, the Schleswig-Holstein state government has shown a foresight and is planning and developing an open source-based directory service with the aim of completely replacing Microsoft's corresponding service in the future.

This initiative not only demonstrates the state government's trust and support for open source technology, but also marks a step forward in the government's information technology strategy in a more efficient, economical and autonomous direction.
