Jakarta, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia successfully completed a one-month joint scientific expedition to the Java Trench on March 23. During this period, scientific researchers from the two countries successfully dived 7,178 meters with the help of the "Struggler" all-sea deep-sea manned submersible, setting a new record for Indonesia's deep-sea diving.

The celebration ceremony of the "China-Indonesia Java Trench Joint Scientific Expedition" was held in Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on the 22nd, which was attended by Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut, Director of the National Research and Innovation Agency, Handoko, Navy Commander Admiral Ali, and Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Lu Kang.

In his speech, Luhut said that this joint scientific expedition has opened a new chapter for the two countries to strengthen maritime cooperation, and hoped that the two countries will take this opportunity to further deepen and expand scientific and technological cooperation and train more outstanding scientists and engineers for Indonesia.

Lu Kang said that in recent years, China-Indonesia cooperation in marine science and technology has been deepening, and he looks forward to more high-quality scientific research results from scientists from the two countries in the future, contributing to building a blue ocean economy and promoting sustainable development.

On November 10, 2020, the "Struggler" successfully sat on the bottom of the Mariana Trench at a depth of 10,909 meters, setting a new record for China's manned deep diving.
