1894

In the summer of that year, the Liaodong border of the Qing Empire was in turmoil, and the Donghak uprising ignited the beacon fire on the Korean Peninsula. Although the young Guangxu Emperor had the heart to go to war, it was difficult to find virtuous ministers and good generals in the court: most of the famous ministers of Tongguang Zhongxing withered, and Li Hongzhang, Zhang Zhidong and others were also dying, who could turn the tide

At this time, Guangxu's teacher, Hubu Shangshu Wengtong

Gong stood up, and he recommended a veteran to the emperor

——

Liu Jintang.

Speaking of Liu Jintang, everyone may not be very familiar with it. In fact, although he does not have the same reputation as Shen Baozhen, Peng Yulin and others, he is a rare hero of Jingbian

——

It is precisely because of his immortal exploits in the northwest that Xinjiang was able to return to China, and the Qing Dynasty was not reduced to half of the country. so

, let's enjoy the highlight moments of Liu Jintang's life and relive his great achievements in Xinjiang.

The force of the country is difficult, and the flying general is famous in the west

It was another unquiet era for China, which had been weathered. The turmoil in the country ended, and the situation on the frontiers of the Qing Dynasty began to become turbulent again. In order to extinguish the peasant movement in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and other places, the Qing government recklessly appealed to the Western powers for help, and thus betrayed a large amount of sovereignty, causing the appetite of these robbers to be hung up at once. Not satisfied with the territorial and interest claims in the treaty, they began to stir up trouble in various parts of the Qing Dynasty's frontiers.

(1865

At the beginning, with the support of Britain, Russia and other powers, Aguba, a general of the Kokand Khanate in Central Asia, led an army to invade Xinjiang. Because the Qing government's rule in Xinjiang was in a state of dispersion at that time, Agubai was able to take advantage of the situation and occupy Kashgar, Aksu, Yarkand, Kuqa and other places one after another, and established the so-called

Zhedeshar Khanate

(Meaning Seven Cities Khanate.)

Later, it occupied Urumqi and controlled a vast area including southern Xinjiang and part of northern Xinjiang. The rebels Bai Yanhu and Ma Rende, who had previously been entrenched in the Shaanxi and Gansu generations, also took the opportunity to join Agubai, causing Agubai's power to expand rapidly. At the same time, Tsarist Russia seized the opportunity to seize Ili, and Britain also secretly provided weapons and equipment to Aguba, intending to support the puppets and swallow Xinjiang. In the face of a precarious situation, after the passage

After the dispute, the Qing court finally settled in the first year of Guangxu

(1875

It was decided to appoint Zuo Zongtang as the minister of the Qincha and lead the army to Xinjiang. He was only 29 years old

The year-old Liu Jintang was appointed by Zuo Zongtang as the prime minister of the camp and led the 25th battalion of Hunan troops to accompany him.

At that time, most of Aguba's forces were concentrated in southern Xinjiang, and the troops in northern Xinjiang were weak, and many rebels rebelled against Aguba's tyrannical rule. In addition, compared with southern Xinjiang, northern Xinjiang is rich in products and fertile land, and if it can recover northern Xinjiang first, it can be used as a base for advancement, and then calm the chaos in the whole of Xinjiang. Therefore, Zuo Zongtang decided to avoid the real and implement the strategy of first the north and then the south. In the second year of Guangxu

(1876

In April, the Qing army began to march into Xinjiang in batches, and at the end of April, Liu Jintang led the main force of the Hunan army to Balikun via Hami, intending to recover Dihua. Seeing this, Agu Bai hurriedly surrendered more than 20,000 people from Ma Rende, Bai Yanhu and other troops to move to Dihua, and sent more than 6,000 troops to garrison the ancient pasture of the choke point. 7

In the second half of the month, Liu Jintang led his army to occupy Fukang and began to plan an attack on Dihua. If you want to attack Dihua, you must first occupy the ancient pastureland, there are two roads from Fukang to the ancient pastureland, one is the road that passes through the Gobi and lacks water sources, and the other is a small road with abundant water, the rebels send heavy troops to guard the small road according to the situation here, and the defense of the main road is relatively weak, this arrangement is actually to force the Qing army to take the road with dangerous conditions, and use the Gobi as a natural barrier to increase the difficulty of the Qing army's logistical supply. Of course, Liu Jintang was clear about the enemy's intentions, he sent people to deliberately dig ditches to divert water, and made a posture of marching from the main road, while he personally led the main force to secretly march from the side road at night, breaking the rebel garrison, and arrived at the city of Gumudi in only one day, taking the rebels by surprise. The Qing army surrounded the ancient pastureland, bombarded the city wall with flowering cannons, blew up several gaps, the rebels in the city were frightened, and there was no courage to resist, after several days of bloody fighting, the Qing army occupied the ancient pasture land, opened the passage to Dihua. In order to completely eliminate the enemy in northern Xinjiang and not give the rebels a chance to breathe, on the night of conquering the ancient pastureland, Liu Jintang made a decisive decision and led a large group of men and horses to attack Dihua directly at night. Ma Rende, Bai Yanhu and others did not expect the Qing army to be so fast, hearing the sound of cannons outside the city, the rebels suddenly fell into chaos, directly abandoned the city and fled south, the Qing army was bloodless, recovered Dihua, Liu Jintang was rewarded by the Qing court as a captain.

Guangxu three years

(1877

In April, when the land of Xinjiang was once again in full bloom, the Qing army reorganized its men and began to march towards southern Xinjiang. On 16 April, Liu Jintang led his troops into the siege of Dabancheng and engaged in a fierce battle with the Agubo army, due to the fierce offensive of the Qing army and the fact that most of the soldiers of the Agubo army were forcibly recruited, the morale was low, and the enemy's reinforcements were quickly repulsed. Liu Jintang personally came to the battle array, and even after being shot on his mount and falling to the ground, he still moved forward, and the invaders in the city saw that there was no hope for help, so they fled south in a hurry. The Qing army surrounded the city and opened artillery bombardment into the city, hitting the ammunition depot in the city, the explosion caused a fire, and also burned the last resistance of the invaders.

In accordance with Zuo Zongtang's order, Liu Jintang treated the prisoners leniently, and all Xinjiang civilians, regardless of nationality, were released home and given food and clothing. Order, these captives are grateful, they are the local people, was forcibly conscripted into the army by Agubai, and the invaders are not the same heart, and now they are so lenient by the imperial court, and there is no evil heart, for a time, Agubai's invading army morale plummeted, the Qing army quickly recovered Turpan, Tuoxun and other cities, completely destroyed Agubai's defense line to block the Qing army's march into southern Xinjiang, Agubai deeply felt that the general trend had gone, and suddenly in the third year of Guangxu (

1877

He died on May 29. There are different theories about the cause of his death, and the "Qing History Manuscript" records that he committed suicide by drinking poisoned wine.

As soon as Agubai died, the rebels immediately collapsed, and Liu Jintang took the opportunity to quickly march into southern Xinjiang. From September of that year, after more than three months of campaigning, the Qing army finally won the fourth year of Guangxu (

1878

In January, all the lost territory in southern Xinjiang was recovered, and China was excited for a while, and the sea was amazed, and Zuo Zongtang once excitedly praised:

Between the three sentences, he quickly swept away the thief atmosphere, chased three thousand miles, recovered the four eastern cities, annihilated thousands of enemies, recovered hundreds of thousands of refugees, and decided quickly, which is rare in ancient times.

As a result, Liu Jintang was praised by the whole army

Although Aguba's puppet khanate was destroyed, the territory of Xinjiang was still not stable, Ili was still occupied by Tsarist Russia, and the Qing envoy Wanyan Chonghou was forced by the threat of Tsarist Russia to sign the Treaty of Livadia with him

, which can be called the loss of power and humiliation of the country. When the news was transmitted back to China, public opinion was in an uproar, and Liu Jintang and other patriotic officials were even more resolutely opposed. In order to salvage the situation, Liu Jintang sent people to survey the Sino-Russian border, drew a map of the Sino-Russian border, and drafted a plan to march into Ili to express the determination of the Xinjiang garrison to recover Ili. At the same time, the Qing court resent Zeng Jize to negotiate with Tsarist Russia, and in the sixth year of Guangxu

(1880

In March, Liu Jintang was appointed as an assistant to handle military affairs in Xinjiang, reorganize the Xinjiang garrison, and prepare for the march into Ili. Due to the military pressure of the Qing army and Zeng Jize's arguments at the negotiating table, in the end, Tsarist Russia withdrew some unreasonable demands and revised the Sino-Russian Ili Treaty

, the Qing Dynasty finally won back part of the sovereignty.

(1882)

, the Qing court officially recovered Ili, considering that Xinjiang is related to the security of the northwest frontier, Liu Jintang asked for the establishment of a province in Xinjiang. At that time, the Qing Dynasty was in the midst of internal and external troubles, the foreign powers unscrupulously plundered silver from China, the imperial court was building the Beiyang and Nanyang navies, and the Empress Dowager Cixi was busy repairing the Summer Palace, which made the treasury empty and unsustainable, so the Korean and Chinese magnates did not support Xinjiang to establish a province for a while. However, the importance of Xinjiang to the defense of the province has been seen by people of insight, Zuo Zongtang and others have repeatedly insisted in the DPRK and China, strongly advocating the establishment of Xinjiang as a province, while Liu Jintang and others have also begun to actively plan in Xinjiang to prepare for the establishment of a province. As early as the period of the Xinjiang Rebellion, Liu Jintang found that there were many ethnic groups in Xinjiang, and the internal decrees of the local ethnic groups to deal with affairs were largely contrary to the decrees of the imperial court, and the old local Berke system had a strong feudal lord color. The Burkes took their own side, arbitrarily issued orders, and ignored the laws of the imperial court, which made the local people miserable, and experienced a great war, and the local social life was depressed. For this reason, Liu Jintang would set up an aftermath bureau in the local area every time he marched into the army, resettled the exiled people, restored agricultural production, and abolished the Burke system and implemented the Qing Dynasty decrees. When the Qianlong Emperor recovered Xinjiang, because the local religion and folk customs were different from those in the mainland, he adopted the method of governing according to customs, and did not fully implement the laws of the Qing Dynasty in the vast areas of Xinjiang that did not set up prefectures and counties, and most of the ordinary civil cases were handled in accordance with the local religious law and customary law. As soon as Liu Jintang arrived, he immediately implemented the imperial court law, and ordered the local Burke to warn the people who had bad deeds, and if they blindly turned a deaf ear, they would be punished immediately to the law, and if these Burkes concealed and did not report it, once they were found, they would be punished together with the criminals. As soon as the order was issued, the local society took on a new look, the local tyrants and inferior gentry no longer dared to do evil wantonly, the people's lives gradually stabilized, and social production gradually recovered. At the same time, in order to promote the development of local agriculture, Liu Jintang led his subordinates to build water conservancy and open up the tuntian

A place in Kashgar, for the restoration of the flood

In the Kashgar River, Liu Jintang sent people to dig branch canals to divide water according to the topography on both sides of the river, block the breach and intercept the flow, and repair the original river, so that the flooded land was planted with crops again.

Kashgar has returned to the prosperity of the north and south of the Yangtze River.

While promoting social and economic development, Liu Jintang exchanged views with Zuo Zongtang and others on how to open up the administration of Xinjiang in Xinjiang. Xinjiang and Gansu have been interdependent since ancient times, and in the past, the mainland had to pass through Gansu to transport supplies to Xinjiang. Since the Ming Dynasty, the Hami area that originally belonged to Xinjiang was under the jurisdiction of Gansu, and after the establishment of the Qing Dynasty, it inherited the administrative division of the Ming Dynasty, and the Hami area in eastern Xinjiang was under the jurisdiction of the Governor of Shaanxi and Gansu. And at that time, Xinjiang was governed by counties

However, there are twenty or thirty places, which are less than half of Guizhou, Guangxi and other provinces, and it is difficult to become a province of its own, so Liu Jintang believes that after Xinjiang is established as a province, it should not be confined to self-defense and alienated from Gansu. After many court discussions, Guangxu ten years (

1884

In September, the Qing court approved the establishment of a province in Xinjiang, and reclassified Hami and other eastern Xinjiang areas into new provinces, and at the same time, in order to highlight the strategic supporting role of Gansu in Xinjiang, the Qing court specially ordered the new province to be ruled as Gansu Xinjiang Province, and Liu Jintang served as the first governor, and added the title of secretary of the military department.

In the early days of the establishment of Xinjiang Province, the population in the region was sparse and the garrison was insufficient. In order to strengthen the armament of the whole of Xinjiang, Liu Jintang reformed the original military government system, established a border defense army, and strengthened the border garrison force. At the same time, it accelerated the immigration from the hinterland, especially Shaanxi and Gansu, and constantly updated the population structure of Xinjiang, adding prefectures and counties, and then in the 28th year of Guangxu

Helping the sick to go on the expedition, the general died of illness in Xiangxiang

The sixteenth year of Guangxu

(1890

At the beginning, Liu Jintang was promoted to the title of prince Taibao, at this time Liu Jintang's grandmother was old and sick, and he himself was riddled with illness because of many years of war. At this time, seeing that the situation in Xinjiang was gradually stabilizing, Liu Jintang finally fulfilled one of his wishes, so he wrote again to ask for a vacancy to recuperate, and this time he finally got the permission of the imperial court, and Liu Jintang returned to his hometown

——

Xiangxiang, Hunan. Since then, the imperial court has still summoned Liu Jintang from time to time to show his favor.

Twenty years of Guangxu

(1894

In June, Liu Jintang was promoted to baron of the first rank. At this time, the war in Liaodong was about to break out, when Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang, came to Xiangxiang, Hunan with the imperial edict, Liu Jintang had been sick for a long time, but when he heard about the Japanese invasion, he resolutely set off with illness, but just arrived in Xiangxiang County, Liu Jintang suddenly suffered a stroke and left hemiplegia. Looking at the people who came to visit, Liu Jintang could no longer speak, but he was still so excited that he couldn't stop crying, but unfortunately the day was not a holiday, and this patriotic star finally died in the twentieth year of Guangxu

(1894

He died suddenly in July at the age of 50

Year.

The bad news spread to Beijing, the court was in mourning, the Guangxu Emperor issued an edict to posthumously admonish Liu Jintang as Xiangqin, and set up a shrine for him, and local officials sacrificed for him every spring and autumn.

Although Liu Jintang's life was short, he made indelible contributions to the stability and territorial integrity of the country, as stated in the elegy inscribed by the Qing court.

Supervise the military affairs of Xinjiang, plan and make decisions, and make compromises in the matter of recovering the people and establishing the reclamation affairs. He was awarded the governor of Xinjiang in Gansu, rewarded with the title of Shangshu, and handled the aftermath of Xinjiang and local affairs

。 It is precisely because of Liu Jintang's proper governance during his stay in Xinjiang that the border has been restored to stability, the people of all ethnic groups have been able to turn their hearts to China, and the country has been reunited. His great achievements will forever be engraved on the monument of history for future generations to admire.
