The Indian smartphone market saw a massive decline of 10% year-on-year in the first half of 2023, but grew by 11% year-on-year in the second half of 2023. Q4 2023 shipments were 37 million units, up 26% year-over-year, with shipments exceeding expectations.

Sales channels

Shipments from online channels fell by 6 percentage points, with their share falling from 53% in 2022 to 49% in 2023. Shipments to offline channels increased 8% year-over-year as suppliers strengthened their retail operations by offering lucrative, high-quality products and expanding into smaller towns.

Proportion of 5G mobile phones

79 million 5G smartphones were shipped in 2023, with a large number of products launched in the mass budget segment. In 2023, the average selling price of 5G drops to $374, down 5% year-over-year.

Apple's iPhone 13 and 14, Samsung's Galaxy A14, vivo's T2x, and Xiaomi's Redmi 12 are the 5G models with the highest shipments in 2023.

Below the $100 price segment

Entry-level (under $100) market share grew 12% year-over-year, from 18% a year ago to 20%. Xiaomi continues to lead the way, with POCO and Samsung rounding out the top three.

$100-$200 price segment

The share of shipments decreased by 7 percentage points from 51% to 44%. Vivo, Realme, and Samsung together accounted for 53% of shipments.

$200-$400 price segment

This price segment remained largely stable, accounting for 21%. Vivo and OnePlus have a large share, accounting for nearly 40% of overall shipments in this price segment.

$400-$600 price segment

The mid-to-high-end market share was 5%, up 27% year-on-year. OnePlus continues to lead the way with a 35% share, followed by Samsung and Vivo.

$600-$800 price segment

Led by the iPhone 13, Galaxy S23 / S23 FE and OnePlus 11, the share of the premium segment ($600 below $800) reached 3%, an increase of 23%. While Apple's share is declining, Samsung's share in this segment has more than doubled.

More than $800

The ultra-premium segment (over $800) saw the highest growth at 86%, with a share rise from 4% to 7%.

The iPhone14/13/14 Plus together accounted for 54% of the shipments, followed by the Galaxy S23+/S23 / S22+/S23 Ultra with 22%. Overall, Apple leads the segment with a 68% share, followed by Samsung with a 30% share.

Although Apple has the highest average selling price of $940, the company has sold 9 million units this year, largely driven by previous generations of iPhone models and their localized production. Its iPhone 13/14 is one of the top five models shipped annually.

Samsung

As a brand, Samsung maintained its lead despite a 5% year-over-year decline in shipments, with an average selling price of a record $338. Its Galaxy A14 is the highest-shipped device in 2023.

vivo

Vivo (excluding iQOO) saw an 8% increase in shipments and a 9% increase in average selling price, jumping to second place. It was the only one of the top five brands to see growth.

realme 真我

Although realme realme faced challenges at the beginning of 2023, it still maintained the third position, driven by economic products.

Feature phones

After four consecutive years of decline, feature phone shipments reached 61 million units, up 8% year-over-year. Samsung exited the feature phone market, with Transsion continuing to lead the way, followed by Lava. Reliance Jio's new 4G feature phone drove growth in the second half of '23.
