After looking at the 150-600mm lens in the M43 system that Aozhixin just released, let's take a look at this compact M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm F4-5.6 II. (hereinafter referred to as the 9-18mm II. generation) lens.
Design
This 9-18mm II. generation lens has an equivalent focal length of 18-36mm, a lens body of only 49.3mm long, a filter size of 52mm, and a weight of only 154g.
It's a very small size to hold in your hand, and it's perfect as a standing hang-up lens.
The first step in using this lens is to rotate it to a focal length scale to shoot. Rotate the zoom ring directly to unscrew the lens to 9mm for the longest end of the lens, and then rotate the barrel to 18mm for a gradual retraction.
When using the finished retracting lens, you need to toggle the lens lock knob and continue to retract until it is fully retracted, which is the minimum state.
At 9mm, most of the length of the lens is basically extended, "This is the complete body of the teacher!"
The first and second lenses we can see are the DSA lenses of Aozhixin, that is, double-sided super aspherical lenses, which can obtain an ultra-wide viewing angle of 100° in a very small volume, and then use the lenses behind to correct it, you can control the volume and make a small mirror body!
There is also a lotus-shaped lens hood in front of the lens, and for wide-angle lenses, a lens hood is equipped as standard to effectively prevent stray light from entering the lens and causing clutter in the picture.
Compared to the SLR version, the back intercept is also much shorter, so this is one of the reasons why the volume can be reduced, of course, even this gives a firm metal bayonet and 4 screws to fix.
Real-life experience
This 9-18mm Gen II lens is very compact, and when paired with the OM-1 Mark II, it is very light in the hand and basically does not cause any burden on shooting, so it can be used as our usual hang-up lens.
With an equivalent focal length of 18-36mm, this lens is a wide-angle lens with a strong sense of perspective, and when shot close to the foreground in actual shooting, the finished shot can present this kind of perspective in the front and back background.
With the lightweight lens body and wide-angle focal length, this lens can easily shoot VLOGs, and with the AI focusing function of the OM-1 Mark II. body, the focus can basically be recognized on the face throughout the whole process, ensuring that the shooting frame can be captured and followed accurately.
At the widest focal length of 18mm, this lens is also suitable for indoor architectural shooting, as it can be easily incorporated into the frame structure of the interior, but it should be noted that at the maximum aperture of F4, the highlight edges are prone to visible chromatic aberration, so in practice, it is recommended to shoot objects with highlights at a reduced aperture.
200% magnification
We shot the green grass on the side of the road at 18mm at the closest focusing distance. Lately, the image quality in focus has been pretty good, but the background blur of the branches is a bit cluttered, so in practice, if you need a better background blur, it's best to shoot in front of a pure background.
The aperture of this lens adopts a floating aperture design, from F4 to F5.6, these two stops of aperture are relatively small, so that this lens does not have much advantage when shooting in low-light environments; we often need to actively reduce the shutter speed to shoot in order to ensure image quality, which can easily lead to the appearance of ghosting, so this lens is still more suitable for shooting in environments with good illumination conditions.
However, to our surprise, when the lens is not stabilized, the handheld 1/13S, or even slower shutter speed, can get a clear enough picture of fixed objects, which is enough to see that the stability of this new camera is very strong.
Review
Overall, this lens is more suitable for shooting street sweeping, VLOG, scenery and other scenes, and the small enough size allows us to easily carry it out, which greatly exerts the advantages of the M43 system. We really like this kind of compact lens, after all, only the lens that is taken out without burden is a good lens!
Merit:
1. Small size and easy to carry
2. It is suitable for shooting with multiple subjects
Shortcoming:
1. Dispersion is prone to occur at the maximum aperture
