Why did "Kazuha" change from "younger brother" to "younger sister"?
In the video, Grandpa Tan said that when "Heye" was born, its gender characteristics were biased towards "younger brother". After a few months of breeding, including its high urination, lively personality, and tall stature, it was identified as a "younger brother", and the dads no longer doubted its gender.
However, as the "wazuha" grows, the distinguishing features of its males become less apparent. The dads asked experts to collect biological samples of "Kazuha", and the results showed that it was indeed "sister".
Why is it so difficult to tell the gender of giant pandas?
At present, there is a saying that the baby panda is a premature baby, and when the mother gives birth to it, its own development is not complete, such as ears and eyes, and there are only a few small protrusions when it is just born. Its genitals are not fully developed, especially for male giant pandas, it takes 3~4 years old for the testicles to sink into the scrotum, and even so, its reproductive organs are not very obvious.
For giant panda researchers, determining the sex of a giant panda can empirically observe or touch the genitals of a baby panda at birth, but the accuracy of this method is very low. The most scientific method is to distinguish males and females through their genitals during physical examinations, and the more rigorous method is to use DNA identification.
Grandpa Tan also said in the video that this situation had happened before, but in fact, this is not the first time that giant pandas have appeared "gender oolong". "He Ye"'s father "Meilan" was mistaken for a female bear, and was also arranged to "go on a blind date" with several male bears.
In 2013, the Atlanta Zoo in the United States issued a statement, saying that the gender of the three baby pandas "Meilun", "Meihuan" and "Bao" was wrong.
Regarding the problem that giant pandas are difficult to distinguish between male and female, there are also theories that this is the result of the degradation of the giant panda race.
