According to a professor of security studies, Tuvalu's election could determine whether the island loses its right to self-determination for its future. Dr Anna Bowles of Massey University noted that Tuvalu's sovereignty would be at risk if the winning candidate supported the Fallepili Treaty. The Treaty of Falepili gave Australia the right of veto over Tuvalu's national security policy in exchange for visas and residency for Tuvalualuans.
Dr Bowers said the agreement was effectively ceding Tuvalu's sovereignty, particularly on national security matters. "If Australia can decide what kind of national security policy Tuvalu can have with other countries or entities, then yes, there is a sovereignty issue," she said. ”

For now, the current Prime Minister, Kasiah Natano, is supportive of the Falepili Treaty, which he believes will secure Tuvalu's future.
