The descriptive characteristics of the characters and stories in Mo Yan's novel "Frog".

author:The children of the old wooden family

1. Description of Mr. Yoshito Sugitani

Mr. Yoshito Sugitani is supposed to be a character in the novel, but it doesn't seem to be.

The first part of the novel begins with a letter to Mr. Yoshito Sugitani, in which the author refers to Yoshito Sugitani, a self-proclaimed student, and confesses: "We are deeply touched by the fact that you have crossed the sea and crossed the country to this backward and remote place, despite your old age and infirmity, to talk about literature with me and the literature lovers of my hometown...... I follow your teachings .......

The second part of the novel begins with a letter from the author to Mr. Yoshito Sugitani, in which the author expresses his praise and gratitude to him, in which the author writes:

What makes me very emotional is that the Japanese commander Sugitani, who was stationed at Pingdu Castle during the Japanese war of aggression against China, mentioned in my letter, is actually your father. In fact, your father was also a victim of war...... The war changed his destiny and turned him from a rescuer to a murderer.......

I read your reply to my aunt, to my father, and to many of us here who lived through that war, and they all sighed with tears in their eyes...... My aunt also whispered to me that she had no bad influence on Ling Zun......

2. Description of Sugitani, an officer of the Japanese invasion of China

The aunt said that Commander Nasugitani was a white-faced young man, wearing a kimono, wearing a pair of white-rimmed glasses, with a small mustache, holding a folding fan in his hand, polite, fluent in Chinese, and a cultural person at first glance. He called the old grandmother his aunt, the eldest grandmother his wife, and his aunt his nephew. My aunt said she didn't have a bad impression of Sugiya. Of course, this is what my aunt said to our own family in private, but she didn't say that to the outside world. She said to the outside world that she and her grandmother were tortured by the Japanese, coerced and enticed......

3. The depiction of mass figures

The names of the characters in the novel "Frog" are all named after human organs without exception, and they are all ugly.

The handlebar style in the village - king's feet, square head, thick neck, stuttering, when speaking, the eyes are shining, and the face is red.

The little friend in the village, Wang Dan, a pocket girl who never grows up, is a dwarf.

A classmate in the village, Chen Bi, was born without breathing...... Make a cat-like cry.

The classmates in the class - we each clutched a piece of coal, clucked and chewed, each with an excited, mysterious expression on their faces. We ate coal while listening to the teacher's lecture in class, and our mouths were full of black and the corners of our mouths were stained with coal dust.

Doctor of the Eighth Route Army - his face is sallow, his hair is long, and lice crawl on his neck. Wearing a torn cotton jacket, the cotton wool is exposed.

My aunt's apprentice, the little lion, has fluffy hair, a flat nose and a square mouth, and has acne on his face, and if she asks her to kill, she will immediately go with a knife, and she will not ask any questions at all.

4. The description of the birth of the wife of the landlord Chen and the production of the author's mother

The scene of the landlord Chen's wife's birth: "Old lady" Tian Guihua is already there, this is a woman with sharp beak and monkey cheeks...... She was riding on top of Elaine, squeezing Elaine's high bulging abdomen. The old woman had chronic bronchitis, and her wheezing was mixed with the pig-killing howls of the mother...... The landlord Chen knelt in the corner of the wall, his head hitting the wall like a kowtow worm, and muttered some slurred words...... Urine flowed all over the floor, the house was filled with commotion, and the old woman's head was broken, and dark blood flowed out......

The scene of the author's mother's birth: When my mother was about to give birth, my grandmother washed her hands and changed her clothes according to her old rules, lit three sticks of incense, inserted them in front of the ancestral tablet, kowtowed three times, and then blasted out all the men in the family......

5. A description of the social environment at the time

It was a time of hunger, and most of the events that remain in my memory are related to eating.

The period from 1953 to 1957 was a good period of national production development and economic prosperity. People are well fed, warmly clothed, and in good moods, and women are scrambling to get pregnant and give birth.

In the spring of 1961, not a single baby was born in more than forty villages of the commune. The reason, naturally, is hunger. Because of hunger, women did not have periods, and because of hunger, men became eunuchs.

To be honest, I only read the second part of Mo Yan's "Frog", and I basically didn't read much of the rest of it, mainly because I was really not interested. However, on the whole, I personally feel that the controversial parts of this novel are concentrated in the first and second parts.

First of all, the novel is a general phenomenon in Chinese society in the fifties and sixties by using the experiences of individual places and characters to describe them as a common phenomenon in Chinese society in the fifties and sixties, which is contrary to the basic requirements of literary creation.

Secondly, some of the plots narrated in the novel did not conform to the social reality of the time, and some were even extremely exaggerated, violating the creative requirement that "the life reflected in literary works should be more typical, more ideal, and more universal than ordinary actual life".

Third, with the help of the characters in the novel, the author made an inappropriate and beautifying description of the harm caused by the invaders to the Chinese people during the Japanese war of aggression against China, which did not conform to historical facts and hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, which naturally aroused the opposition of the masses with patriotic feelings.

Fourth, whether it is in terms of creative form, plot arrangement, character description, theme or social significance, the novel does not have the characteristics of an excellent work, and it is no wonder that such a work was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, which has caused widespread controversy in society.

There may also be people who believe that Mo Yan's novel exposes the so-called "dark side" of society and deserves praise. Those who hold this viewpoint either lack understanding or have little understanding of history, or they belong to the kind of people who follow the crowd and have no independent opinions of their own.

In fact, through the creation of novels, describing the darkness and backwardness of society, Mo Yan is not a pioneer, nor is he a leader, people with a little literary knowledge know that in this regard, in modern times, Mr. Lu Xun's works are the most typical, profound, excellent, and most popular works among the masses, such as "The True Story of Ah Q", "Blessing", such as "Kong Yiji" and "Medicine".

In ancient times, the most typical representative figure in this regard was the poet Du Fu. Out of dissatisfaction with the darkness of society and concern and sympathy for the miserable life of the people, Du Fu wrote famous poems such as "Soldiers' Chariots", "Beauty Lines", "Three Officials" and "Three Farewells".

As the saying goes, "shop around", there is no harm without contrast. Comparing Mo Yan's works with the works of Mr. Lu Xun and Mr. Du Fu, he immediately made a judgment.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is not the highest or only criterion for judging the level of literary works, perhaps it has its merits or temptations, but when it awards the Nobel Prize in Literature to a novel that has problems in ideology, artistry, advancement, and science, does such an award have any other purpose than to achieve the purpose of "killing people and punishing the heart"?
