A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang

The depth of the epicenter is 22 km

There were 40 aftershocks of magnitude 3 and above

According to the aftershock statistics of the China Earthquake Network, as of 8 o'clock on January 23, a total of 40 aftershocks of magnitude 3.0 and above were recorded, including 29 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0-3.9, 8 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0-4.9, 3 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0-5.9, 0 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and above, and the largest aftershock of magnitude 5.3 at present, about 17 kilometers away from the epicenter of the main shock.

The Ministry of Emergency Management activated the three-level emergency response for the earthquake

The first batch of relief supplies arrived in the earthquake-stricken area

At 2:09 on January 23, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. The Office of the Earthquake Relief Headquarters of the State Council and the Ministry of Emergency Management launched a three-level emergency response to the earthquake and dispatched a working group to the earthquake area to guide the earthquake relief work. Wang Xiangxi, deputy commander-in-chief of the Earthquake Relief Headquarters of the State Council and minister of emergency management, continued to dispatch and understand the earthquake situation and guide rescue and rescue.

As of 5 o'clock on the 23rd, 41 vehicles, 192 people, and 3 search and rescue dogs of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Fire and Rescue Corps rushed to the scene, and 7 heavy and 5 light earthquake rescue teams and 7 mobile teams of the Xinjiang Fire and Rescue Corps with a total of 710 people were assembled, and 500 people, 112 vehicles, and 4 search and rescue dogs of the Xinjiang Forest Fire Brigade have been assembled and ready to be dispatched at any time. The earthquake rescue teams of the Tibet and Gansu Fire and Rescue Corps have been assembled according to the plan.

In the early morning of the 23rd, the Office of the National Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief Committee and the Ministry of Emergency Management, together with the State Food and Material Reserves Administration, urgently allocated a total of 22,000 pieces of central disaster relief materials, including 1,000 cotton tents, 5,000 cotton coats (cold-proof clothing), 5,000 quilts, 5,000 cotton mattresses, 5,000 folding beds, and 1,000 heating stoves, to Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to fully support the local earthquake relief and the relocation and resettlement of the affected people. The first batch of about 10,000 relief materials arrived at the disaster area at noon on the 23rd. All supplies are expected to arrive from the night of the 23rd to the early morning of the 24th.

The fire and rescue team quickly assembled and felt the platoon

After the 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang, fire and rescue forces were quickly assembled, and many teams have arrived at the nearest township to the epicenter - Yamansu Kirgiz Township, Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, to visit and find out as soon as possible.

As of 9:30 a.m. on January 23, the Aksu Prefecture Fire and Rescue Detachment had completed the construction of 58 disaster relief tents in six administrative village resettlement sites, equipped with 150 fire extinguishers at each resettlement site, and assisted in the transfer and distribution of 8 tons of disaster relief materials. At the same time, personnel were deployed to carry out fire prevention inspections in the resettlement area without interruption.

On the morning of January 23, rescuers from the Aksu Brigade of the Bazhou Detachment of the Xinjiang Forest Fire Brigade were carrying warm and cold-proof materials.

Why are there many earthquakes in Xinjiang? Will there be strong aftershocks?

According to the official determination of the China Earthquake Network, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang at 2:09 on January 23, with an epicenter at a depth of 22 kilometers and an epicenter at 41.26 degrees north latitude and 78.63 degrees east longitude. Since then, there have been several aftershocks. At present, the China Earthquake Administration is organizing an emergency meeting, and Han Yanyan, a senior engineer of the China Earthquake Network Center, analyzed the characteristics of the earthquake.

1

What type of earthquake is this earthquake in?

Han Yanyan, Senior Engineer of China Earthquake Network Center: According to the comprehensive analysis of regional tectonic characteristics, historical seismic activity level, sequence characteristics and geophysical observations, it is believed that the main residual type of this earthquake is more likely.

2

What are the characteristics of this earthquake and why are many earthquakes felt in Xinjiang?

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake with 40 aftershocks in the morning...... What's new→

Han Yanyan, Senior Engineer of China Earthquake Network Center: The Tianshan Earthquake Zone is located in Central Asia, with the Pamir Plateau and Tarim Basin in the south, and the Kazakh Platform and Junggar Basin in the north. Since the Cenozoic, due to the long-range effect of the strong collision and continuous squeezing of the Eurasian plate by the Indian plate, this region belongs to one of the regions with strong tectonic movement in China, with an average of earthquakes of magnitude 7 or higher occurring every 7 years or so, the most recent of which was a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Tajikistan on February 23, 2023.

Due to the large magnitude of this earthquake and the depth of the epicenter of 22 kilometers, it is a shallow earthquake, so it will cause many earthquakes to be felt strongly.

3

Is there likely to be a strong aftershock?

Han Yanyan, Senior Engineer of China Earthquake Network Center: As of 3:40, 13 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or higher have been recorded, and the largest aftershock recorded is 5.3. The magnitude of this earthquake is 7.1, which is preliminarily judged to be a major coincidence sequence, and the possibility of strong aftershocks cannot be ruled out in the future.
