What changes will occur in the body when you eat potato chips regularly?

Potato chips bring more joy than any other snack, so there is no shortage of people who will eat 1 pack every day when they are fine. But such happiness is there, but health may be farther and farther away from you.

Gain weight

Most commercially available potato chips can be described as a "calorie bomb", and the fat content is not low. For example, the potato chips that many people like to eat in the picture below, with a calorie of 565kcal/100g and a net content of 62g in a pack, can be completed in less than 5 minutes, and will consume 350kcal, which is equivalent to almost 2 bowls of rice.

The fat content is even more staggering, at 38g/100g. The potatoes themselves are very low in fat, only 0.2g/100g, and almost all of the fat in the chips comes from the added oil, and a 62g pack of chips contains almost 24g of fat, which is equivalent to 2.5 tablespoons of cooking oil.

Even non-fried potato chips are not oil-free, nor are they low-fat. For example, the non-fried potato chips in the picture below, 1 box of 2 packs with a total of 97g, will consume 223kcal of calories and 20.4g of fat when eaten all.

Such a high-fat, high-calorie snack, if you have to eat it every day, will make you obese day by day, your body fat rate will soar, and your small belly will become more and more obvious.

Susceptibility to cardiovascular disease

While potato chips make you gain weight, they also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A meta-analysis of observational studies on the mainland found that consuming fried foods may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in a linear dose-response relationship. Eating just 114g more fried foods per week increases the risk of cardiovascular disease events, including coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and death from cardiovascular disease.

114g of potato chips is about 1.5 packets or 1 bucket, and for those who love potato chips, it is a matter of minutes to show off all these potato chips.

Besides, the sodium content of some potato chips is not low, such as the one below, a box of 2 packs will consume about 1.7g of salt, which accounts for 34% of the recommended salt intake limit of the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents".

Increased risk of cancer

Potato chips are cooked at high temperatures and are processed to produce acrylamide, a Group 2A carcinogen, meaning it has been shown to cause cancer in animals, but there is limited evidence that it causes cancer in humans.

In addition, a study in the British Medical Journal mentioned that eating a lot of ultra-processed foods increases the risk of colorectal cancer in men. This may be because fried food promotes the body's inflammatory response, and persistent chronic inflammation can cause harm to the body and promote the development of cancer.

Bagged potato chips and bucket potato chips are actually different

When it comes to the packaging of potato chips, how many people think that the difference between barreled potato chips and bagged potato chips is only in the change of packaging?

In fact, it's not that simple! In addition to the difference in appearance, they are also different in appearance, and there are differences in processing technology.

Bagged potato chips are generally raw potato chips, which are made by slicing fresh potatoes and further processing, which is why more people love to eat bagged potato chips.

How to make potato chips at home?

For those who like to eat potato chips, if you want to take care of your health, it is recommended to make your own potato chips at home, which is super simple.

Prepare a fresh potato, wash it and peel it, and peel it with a peeler, and you can also cut it directly into thin slices with good knife skills.

Soak in cold water for 20 minutes and change the water twice. Use kitchen paper to absorb the moisture on the surface of the potato slices, put a piece of oil paper in the baking tray, place the potato slices evenly inside, bake in the oven at 175°C, bake for 10~20 minutes (the specific time should be adjusted according to the thickness of the potato slices, observe more), and turn over once in the middle.

Once baked, sprinkle with your favorite seasonings, such as cumin powder, chili flakes, pepper, etc. The resulting chips are oil-free, thin and crispy, and have a good taste.

If you just like to eat fried potato chips, you have to control the oil temperature. The color of fried potato chips depends on the temperature, the temperature below 155°C, the reaction to turn brown is relatively slow, above 170°C for too long frying, the potato chips will gradually turn black, the oil temperature between 155~170°C can better maintain the golden yellow color of the potato chips. In addition, studies have shown that the highest percentage of acrylamide is formed at 180°C in fried potato chips. Therefore, it is best to fry the oil temperature of potato chips, and it is best to control it at 155~170°C.

In the absence of a thermometer, how to control the oil temperature? You can observe the change of oil, when the oil level is obviously turned and moves to the center, and the side of the pot begins to have oil smoke, it means that the oil temperature is between 140~180°C. We put the oil in the pan when the oil surface is just starting to stir significantly, and fry it for about 1 minute.

Summary:

The temptation of small potato chips is big, inadvertently making you buy more, eat fat, and hurt your cardiovascular system! It doesn't matter if you eat occasionally, 1 pack a day is not recommended, you must control yourself~
