Honor released MagicOS 8.0: 7B device-side large model landed

Tencent Digital / Wu Bin

Beijing time on January 10th, Honor released a new MagicOS 8.0 operating system, the biggest change in this system is that the end side integrates a complete set of 7B scale large models, and almost all new functions are based on large models, the system will be released on January 11 Glory Magic 6 series mobile phones are the first to be equipped.

The device-side large model brings semantic understanding capabilities

Honor MagicOS 8.0 is equipped with the 7B model independently developed by Honor, and with the blessing of this model, the system can achieve relatively complete semantic understanding capabilities. Honor has designed two typical scenarios for this ability, one is "Any Gate" and the other is "Wisdom Film".

The arbitrary door function uses AI to actively identify and disassemble key content for text content in the mobile phone, and realizes cross-application human-computer interaction capabilities. For example, if a user copies a WeChat chat history, AI will actively analyze the key content of the text and associate it with the relevant app, and the user can drag the information to the edge of the screen on the left and right sides to trigger any door and flow to the corresponding application service. This function can realize the flow of content including interface text, pictures, files, etc.

It is reported that at present, Honor's "Any Door" supports services such as one-trailer, navigation, search, shopping, password relief, printing, sharing, and global collection.

Based on AI's recognition and understanding of image content, the smart film function actively summarizes and organizes the photos in the image library. At the press conference, Honor demonstrated this function, when the user said: "I want to generate a video composed of all the photos related to Jane's dancing from childhood to the present", the system can intelligently detect and filter the pictures and videos in the gallery according to the user's preferences and key nodes, actively match music subtitles, and generate videos with one click.

Honor said that on MagicOS 8.0, these AI capabilities are based on the 7B device-side large model, including chat records, photos and other content will not be on the cloud, ensuring the privacy and security of users. Zhao Ming, CEO of Honor, said when talking about the differentiation of artificial intelligence capabilities on mobile phones: "If the understanding of user intent in the past was a menu-based subscription model, now it is more about understanding the user's intent through the content around the user. ”

In addition to active AI capabilities, passive AI capabilities with AI blessings have also been upgraded in MagicOS 8.0. Honor has upgraded the original smart capsule function, through eye movement control multi-modal interaction technology, it can be based on eye tracking, when the user sees the notification, and feels that this is a more important message that needs further processing, the capsule notification will actively identify the user's intention, and gradually move on to the next action.

The newly added global collection function can support the collection of multiple channels, multiple methods, and multiple types of content such as downloads, system application content, web pages, graphics and texts, and local lassoes, and help users complete the sorting of collections in the background through the ability of AI, so that users can quickly retrieve relevant content.

Smartphone running enters the era of AI SmartPhone

Honor first proposed the concept of device-side AI at the Shanghai MWC in June last year, and Zhao Ming announced at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit held in Hawaii last October that the Magic6 series will support a large device AI model with 7 billion parameters, and also demonstrated the MagicOS "smart chip" and other device-side AI functions.

With the release of the MagicOS 8.0 line, domestic mainstream smartphone manufacturers, including Honor, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo have completed the initial transformation from traditional smartphones to AI smartphones, while Samsung Apple and other international manufacturers are also actively deploying artificial intelligence, Samsung is holding CES 2024, has shown the artificial intelligence technology that will be carried on the S24 series of mobile phones, and Apple is reported to be in the WWDC in June this year 24. An LLM large language model was demonstrated.

This means that after the rapid development of AI in 2023, smartphone manufacturers have now completed the layout of AI technology and entered the era of AI smartphones.

For smartphones with the support of AI capabilities, manufacturers have reached a consensus on the AI capabilities of the combination of devices and clouds, covering models with a scale of 6-10B on the device side, realizing basic semantic understanding, Wensheng text, and Wensheng graphs, and through the self-learning and Xi capabilities of background AI, to help users better sort out the information flow in the mobile phone and improve the efficiency of the mobile phone.

On the cloud side, vendors are empowering more AI capabilities on mobile phone assistants, upgrading traditional voice assistants, realizing larger-scale human-machine dialogue understanding functions, and realizing divergent understanding and active generation capabilities based on larger-scale AI models.

Although manufacturers have all seen the transformation of smartphones brought about by the development of AI, the focus is different. Taking Honor as an example, although Honor recognizes the collaboration between the device side and the cloud model in the future, and the complementary advantages of the two will bring a better experience, Honor believes that the core of AI capabilities is still on the device side.

This is because in the process of developing AI capabilities, ensuring the security of user data and privacy is the most critical element, and end-to-device AI has more advantages in this regard. Zhao Ming told Tencent Digital at last year's Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit that users may use the cloud model to write martial arts novels and poems, but they will not rest assured that the cloud model will identify family photos and make videos.

According to Counterpoint Research's latest Generative AI Smartphone Shipment Insights, generative AI smartphones accounted for 4% of total smartphone shipments in 2023, reaching 47 million units, and are expected to surge to 8% in 2024. By 2027, shipments are expected to reach 522 million units, accounting for 40% of the market share, with an average annual growth rate of 83%.

This means that AI-enabled mobile phones will become a mandatory choice for smartphones for a long time to come. With the upstream chip design companies including Qualcomm and MediaTek, chip technology companies involved in the formulation of standards such as Broadcom and Nvidia, as well as mobile phone manufacturing companies such as Honor, Huawei, and Samsung, they have promoted the rapid iteration of smartphones in the direction of artificial intelligence.

The industry is generally optimistic that 2024 will become the first independent growth year for smartphones after the trough period of the past three years, which means that the competition in the smartphone industry will be more fierce in 2024, and whether the layout of AI capabilities is perfect will change the pattern of the smartphone market in the next 1-3 years.
