Tencent and Ubisoft became the first developers to use Nvidia's NPC AI

Nvidia recently announced an expansion to its AI game production tool, Nvidia Ace, at CES 2024. The tool, which is now available to partners, allows game development companies to generate AI-generated video game characters using specific parts. Ubisoft and Tencent were among the first major developers to adopt this process tool.

Nvidia Ace is a platform that allows creators to generate non-player characters (NPCs) through AI. With several different tools, characters can be dynamically rendered into the game scene and their lip sync matches what is being said using the audio lip sync tool. In addition, the tool is also capable of converting the player's speech into text and outputting responses through the text-to-speech tool. Overall, this versatile tool can create fully voiced, dynamic video game characters.

NVIDIA Ace itself is not a new technology, and this microservice is still attractive to partners for the whole process that is now open to partners. Developers can now use a portion of the toolset instead of having to use the entire closed system. According to Nvidia, several well-known big companies are already involved, such as Ubisoft and Tencent, although it is unclear how they plan to use the service.

Regarding the training data used by Ace, it is not yet clear what exactly happened. When asked about generating datasets for writing and sound, Nvidia said "there are no easy answers." They point out that several AI tools are used in Ace, each of which can be trained on a different dataset.

This may not be the definitive answer that those who oppose the use of AI want to hear. For example, Nvidia's stance raises questions about whether the tool uses voice actors who are willing to use their voices for AI training. If Ace were to be integrated into the main game by a company like Ubisoft, it would inevitably spark some discussion among artists (not just voiceovers, but also environment art, paintings, etc.), as they seemed to "can't guarantee that their work won't be part of the training data".

Some players joked that maybe in the future, everyone will never see the "mime" of Japanese game companies again.
