Red Rock Sound has released the EQ173 Preamp Equalizer Plug-in and the PUNCH All-in-One Channel Strip Plug-in

author:Nine Tone Culture

Red Rock Sound has launched two mixing software, the EQ173 Preamp EQ Plug-in and the PUNCH All-in-One Channel Strip Plug-in, designed for MS, stereo and immersive mixing, providing multi-channel mixing for immersive sound.

Based on this divine Class A transistor mic/line amplifier (with EQ) introduced in 1970, the Red Rock Sound EQ173 embodies beautiful sound with unmatched clarity, shine, and bite.

PUNCH combines the efficient design and flexible sound shaping of analog channel strips with the unique variety of coloration and cohesive sound of digital channel strips.

Designed from the ground up on a classic basis, the EQ173 and PUNCH plug-ins provide a fast, efficient workflow for MS, stereo and immersive sound mixing, without the need for lengthy and cumbersome channel setups. The two plug-ins have a lot in common in terms of functionality, they have the same input routing section, amplification and equalization section, and bottom setting section, but the difference is in the compression section and the master section.

Enter the routing section

The input routing module lets you choose between 44 common channel settings from stereo all the way up to 7.1.4 and 9.1.6, just select the channel setting that suits your track in the input routing module. It is also possible to create your own input routing profiles, with 16 independent channels available.

Click the Edit button next to the input routing display. Hold down the Shift button and select the desired number of channels. Name the selected channels in order. Then click "Save" and name the profile.

Channel selection

In this module, you can select (activate) the channels that the equalizer will process.

FX Selection

This module selection allows you to choose an equalizer from four available equalizers. The equalizers are arranged in series, which allows for four configuration processing scenarios to be processed using different equalizer settings.

For example, the first EQ is only the middle channel, the second EQ is only the side channel, and the third EQ is the left and right channels. For multi-channel mode: the first EQ is only the left and right channels, the second EQ is the center channel, the third EQ is LFE, etc.

The Fx button can be renamed for ease of use. To rename the selected Fx button, right-click the button.

To turn on the EQ's solo (listening), double-click the selected EQ number. The EQ in solo mode lights up yellow, and to exit solo mode, double-click again. For dual-channel mode, only one equalizer can be solo mode. For multi-channel mode, one or more equalizers can be used individually.

To bypass EQ processing, press the selected equalizer number with one click + Shift. In bypass mode, the button will light up red.

You can also copy all equalizer settings to another equalizer. To do this, select the equalizer from which you want to copy the settings, then click the Copy button and select the equalizer you want to copy the settings to.

Amplify and equalize some features:

Preamplifier section:

• Line Gain — Line Gain increases when the knob is turned counterclockwise. Range: -20dB to +10dB;

• Mic Gain Microphone Gain — To increase the microphone drive, turn the knob clockwise. Range: -20dB to -80dB. The PreAmp preamp does not increase gain, only harmonic distortion. The distortion is slight and adds some color.

• High-band High Shelf knob—provides approximately ±15 dB of smooth, fixed-frequency tilt equalization at 12 kHz. Rotate the controller clockwise to add the famously high-end shine, or counterclockwise to reduce treble response;

• IF Band—The IF band is controlled by two knobs to provide a smooth, half-parameter IF equalization. The right knob controls the band gain, and the left knob selects the band frequency or band disable. When the gain is adjusted, the response of this band depends on the bandwidth. The higher the center frequency, the higher the Q value and the more concentrated the peaks;

• Low Band — The low band provides smooth low-frequency tilt equalization, controlled by two knobs. The right knob controls the band gain, and the left knob selects the shelf frequency or band disable. The usable range is about ±15 dB. When the knob position indicator goes straight down, the band gain is zero;

• Low-cut filter—This knob specifies the fixed frequency of the low-cut (high-pass) filter. The filter has a slope of 18 dB per octave. Available frequencies are 50 Hz, 80 Hz, 160 Hz, 300 Hz, and OFF off.

Main control interface selection:

• Input — The input adjusts the signal level at the plug-in input without affecting the sound signature of the signal. The usable range is ±24 dB;

• PHASE — The PHASE button reverses the polarity of the signal. When the switch is engaged, the phase is reversed. Put the switch in the off state to the normal stage;

• EQ — When the EQ switch is on, the equalizer starts. To disable EQ, disconnect the switch. In EQ173, the audio is still colored even when the EQ switch is off and the EQ setting is in the "flat" position. This is because the signal still passes through the preamplifier circuit;

• Output — The output adjusts the level of the signal at the plug-in output without affecting the sound signature of the signal. The usable range is ±24 dB.

To use the EQ173 as a plug-in, you need an AUv3-compatible host application, such as GarageBand, Auria, AUM, Cubasis, etc. - the EQ173 will appear in the Audio Unit Extensions list for the effects plug-in in the host application.

The settings section at the bottom of the plug-in provides useful features such as Global Input Gain, Macro Control, AGC (Automatic Gain Control), Global Output Gain, Undo/Redo, A/B, Preset Display, Load, Save, Oversampling, AGC Settings, and more.

Differences between the main control part:

The EQ173 and PUNCH have different controls in terms of how they handle sound: the EQ173's main control area contains input, phase, pre-amplification, EQ and output parameters. The user can control the signal level of the selected equalizer by adjusting the input and output parameters, and the phase button is used to reverse the phase of the signal. The switches for the preamplifier and equalizer are used to enable or disable these two functions, respectively, and even if the equalizer is disabled, the signal is still affected by the sound coloration.

PUNCH ADDS A SWITCH FOR THE COMPRESSOR TO TOGGLE THE ORDER OF THE EFFECTS PROCESSED IN THE EQUALIZATION AND COMPRESSION CHAINS P-AMP EQ COMP / P-AMP COMP EQ BUTTONS.

PUNCH combines the efficient design and cohesive sound of analogue channel strips with the unique variety of timbres and flexible sound shaping possibilities unique to digital channel strips.

Compress section

PUNCH adds an extra compression section to the EQ173. The compression section of the PUNCH provides a side-chain filter function that removes unwanted low frequencies from the side-chain control signal. In addition, there are compression threshold, gain compensation, compression ratio, compression knee point, start time, and release time functions, as well as a dry/wet ratio function and gain attenuation table dedicated to the compression section.

The EQ173 and PUNCH surround profiles in Logic Pro are not working properly due to an error in Logic Pro's AUv3 compatibility with multichannel tracks (plug-ins will work when Apple fixes this). AUv3 on multi-channel tracks works absolutely correctly in Reaper.

The EQ173 and PUNCH are available for Windows and MacOS, support M-series processors, and support VST, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in formats.
