Introduction to Lishan root carving
The Warring States Chu Jian's "Rongcheng Clan" recorded: In the past, Shun cultivated in Liqiu, which is said to be Shun cultivating Lishan, that is, Jinan Thousand Buddha Mountain. Lishan root carving, originally spread in the area of Jinan South Locust Tree, in the selection of materials mainly use the roots of Vitex (scientific name: Huangjing) and wild sour jujube tree, all of which come from Jinan Lishan, that is, the southern mountainous area of Jinan marked by Thousand Buddha Mountain. In particular, the carving of historical figures and zodiac works mainly uses wattle roots. The reason for this is the growing environment, which is mostly mountainous slopes, arid and waterless, and the soil is barren. The roots of the vitex tree especially grow in the crevices of the rocks of the mountains. Lack of fertilizer and water, soil is scarce, and it is difficult for other trees to grow. However, with a tenacious spirit, the vitex tree grows slowly and with difficulty in the squeeze of the mountain rocks. In the limited space between the rocks, its roots are extruded into various strange shapes, and the growth rings are only as thick as the skin of the nails, so their density is high and the texture is hard. It is the best root material for creating root carving works such as people and animals. Therefore, the inheritors of its craftsmanship are all Jinan people, and the use of Jinan's local root materials, the creation of Jinan traditional theme of the root carving works, so it is called "Lishan root carving".
