The Choro spider is a spider native to China and Japan and is a round-woven spider with black and yellow stripes that can reach up to eight inches in length. If their massive size and intimidating appearance weren't enough, they can also fly.

Choro spiders have a way of moving through the air called "balloons" where they release silk that is captured by the breeze, allowing them to be hung up and float for long distances.

This is something that many spiders do, but it's also one way this behemoth spider quickly spread to the eastern United States.

The invasive species was first identified in Georgia in 2013 and has since spread to other regions, as far north as Washington, D.C.

It is likely that these spiders came to North America via cargo ships.

Despite its huge size, the Choro spider is largely harmless to humans and pets. Their jaws cannot pierce human skin and can only kill small insects. So while they may look exceptionally intimidating, at least they're not dangerous!

It's too early to tell what impact they've had on local wildlife, but researchers note that they've replaced some of Georgia's larger spiders. Researchers say it will be difficult to control their spread if spiders successfully cross the border.
