In the early morning of West Lake after winter, the temperature drops below freezing.
The white West Lake water is silent and traceless, and the mountains in the distance are gray. In the Willow Wave Oriole Park, facing the West Lake, there is a small wooden house with orange lights. This warm color makes this simple landscape painting instantly more pyrotechnic.
This is the Liulang Wenying Smile Pavilion, which is the first fixed pure public welfare volunteer service smile pavilion in Hangzhou, which was founded in 2010. In the West Lake Scenic Area, there are a total of 6 such smile pavilions.
Shi Zhiping's workspace is in the Willow Lang Wenying Smile Pavilion. In more than 10 years of volunteering, he has accumulated more than 19,000 hours of service, and he has just been awarded the 19th Hangzhou Moral Model (Civilian Hero).
Shi Zhiping, 71, is thin, has gray hair, wears a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, walks with a light step and a straight back. Wearing a red volunteer overalls over a black velvet jacket, she stood out in the crowd. Shi Zhiping is an "old Hangzhou" who has lived in the area of Renhe Road in Shangcheng District since he was a child. Like many of his peers, his life trajectory is closely linked to the development of the times: after graduating from middle school, he went to the countryside and worked in the vast world of Heilongjiang for eight years; In his body, he has the passion and heroism of "Brother Longjiang", the integrity and enthusiasm of "Hang Tietou", and the indifference and calmness of going through the world.
In 2012, Shi Zhiping retired and returned to his hometown from Shenzhen. "When I first retired, my family wanted to give me a retirement gift," he recalls. I said, please help me with ideas, I don't think I'm old yet, I want to do something I haven't tried before. ”
His wife suggested that you go to volunteer and accompany him to the site to sign up.
"I came back to Hangzhou in mid-January, and in early March, I completed my registration training and started volunteering. ”

A cup of tea, sent for ten years
The Smile Pavilion covers an area of about 40 square meters, and there is a rectangular wooden table in the house, on which the scenic stamp, translator, and newspaper of the day are placed, and around the wooden table are the West Lake travel brochure, wheelchairs that can be borrowed at any time, more than a dozen umbrellas and baby care tables. On the other side, a large kettle of boiling water is bubbling hot.
Shi Zhiping Xi used to writing work diaries, and when he opens the calendar from 2016 to the present, he can find that midsummer is his busiest time every year. Because the weather is hot, the Willow Wave Oriole Smile Pavilion will provide free tea for citizens and tourists. This is a service that has been launched since the day the Smile Pavilion was inaugurated and continues to this day.
When the summer was the hottest, Shi Zhiping rushed to the Smile Pavilion at about 8 o'clock, boiled water first, and then set up a white folding table for tea barrels, and moved tea barrels, a large tea barrel to hold 100 liters of tea. To make tea and dry tea, part of the tea is placed in the smile pavilion, relying on the air conditioner, and it is naturally cooled; part of the tea is poured back and forth with a long-handled spoon, and the temperature drops to about 40 degrees, and then the tea is scooped from the stainless steel bucket into the small bucket with a faucet, greeting the citizens and tourists who come and go.
In order to allow tourists to feel the tea culture of Hangzhou in detail, the "free herbal tea" of the Smile Pavilion always has new ideas: Jingshan tea, Longjing tea, Sanhua (honeysuckle, rose, jasmine) tangerine peel tea, lily Ruyi tea, chrysanthemum tea...... These teas are provided by the Youth League Working Committee of the West Lake Scenic Area Management Committee. In 2023 alone, 20.5 tons of tea will be delivered at the Willow Lang Wenying Smile Pavilion. Over the years, the "free herbal tea" distributed by Shi Zhiping has reached 232.5 tons, allowing more than 400,000 tourists and citizens to feel the temperature of "Hangzhou, a good city".
The working hours of the Smile Pavilion start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. But sometimes when it's time to finish, there is still tea in the big tea barrel that has not been delivered, Shi Zhiping thinks not to waste it, there may be people who need tea, so he will always stay a little longer. From July until the end of the National Day Golden Week, Shi Zhiping served at the Smile Pavilion for more than 26 days almost every month.
He gave each student volunteer a 100 rating. Regretted afterwards
In the summer of 2021, 19 students from Zhejiang University of Foreign Chinese came to the Liulang Wenying Smile Pavilion to participate in volunteer services. At the end of the activity, each student is given a score, and the school stipulates a maximum score of 100.
Shi Zhiping gave each student a score of 100. However, he was deeply remorseful afterwards.
"It's not that the students don't deserve 100 points, on the contrary, they are all great. 100 points are the result of their selfless dedication. However, if I could re-rate them, I would give them a 99. ”
Volunteering is always on the road, and 99 points leave a space for growth and a goal to strive for, so that people can continue to pursue perfection. "Just like the herbal tea we send every summer, can we get 100 points? If you think about it, there are still many possibilities for improvement, but at this stage, we have done our best. ”
Therefore, he always pays attention to some small "little things". For example, there is also a drifting book kiosk built next to the Smile Pavilion, and Shi Zhiping has specially classified the books, and the books suitable for children to read are placed on the lowest floor, so that children can read them freely.
His actions have even touched people they don't know. On that day, Xiao Liu, a tourist from Shanghai, passed by the Smile Pavilion and asked if there was a guide map of West Lake. At a glance, seeing the volunteer work hours densely written on Shi Zhiping's work calendar on the table, Miss Liu was touched.
It turned out that Xiao Liu's major in college was social work, and this time he came to Hangzhou on a business trip, and by the way, he went to the West Lake to relax and sort out the confusion in his work: "As a social worker, it is sometimes difficult to gain the trust of others, and it is also difficult to mobilize truly capable people to achieve community co-governance together." ”
After a short exchange with Shi Zhiping, Xiao Liu had more experience of volunteer work. "This uncle's smile after doing something is the best encouragement for me. When Xiao Liu said goodbye, he specially stamped the commemorative seal of "Singing Orioles in the Willow Waves" on the guide map of the West Lake.
Volunteering is like an umbrella, in the ordinary, a little bit of warmth
In addition to the annual "free tea", the Smile Pavilion also provides festive services, such as the annual Qingming Festival to send the Youth League, the Dragon Boat Festival to deliver zongzi, the Mid-Autumn Festival to deliver moon cakes, the Laba Festival to deliver Laba porridge and so on. All the service targets are citizens and tourists.
The work of volunteers is mundane and trivial. But Shi Zhiping did it happily. He thinks like this: "When I was young, I went on a business trip, and I didn't have a mobile phone, let alone navigation, so I could only rely on strangers to guide me or look up a map. If I arrive in a new city and ask for directions smoothly, I will be very happy, and I will like the city because of such a small thing, and I will feel that the city is highly civilized. ”
Shi Zhiping is willing to be such a "guide", and he hopes that all tourists will fall in love with our city because of such thoughtful little things.
There are also memorable moments in my daily volunteer work. For example, in January 2016, Hangzhou was hit by a cold wave. "At that time, the waves in West Lake were very large, and when a wave fell, the ground immediately froze. Due to the safety concerns of the volunteers, it was decided to close the Smile Pavilion at short notice. But I thought about it, since it is an extreme weather, there may be tourists and citizens who need our help more. ”
So Shi Zhiping still came to the Smile Pavilion. "On the way here, I saw that the road was covered with straw mats, so I didn't feel like I was quickening my pace. It was so cold by the West Lake that the mobile phone was so cold outdoors that it was turned off directly. Although there were only sporadic tourists by the West Lake that day, the open Smile Pavilion was like a big security umbrella, ready to shelter pedestrians from the wind and rain. ”
Also in 2016, during the G20 Hangzhou Summit, one day, there was a sudden rainstorm by the West Lake. Two ladies from Argentina were visiting the West Lake, and they hurriedly ran into the Smile Pavilion to take shelter from the rain and met Shi Zhiping, who was on duty.
Just like the story of the White Lady who met Xu Xian by the West Lake to borrow an umbrella to help, Shi Zhiping also took out two umbrellas and handed them to the two ladies. These umbrellas are all old umbrellas donated by Hangzhou citizens, and Hangzhou environmental protection volunteers have repaired the umbrellas and turned them into "love umbrellas", so that citizens and tourists can access them at any time when they need them. The two foreign tourists thanked each other in surprise.
This is one of the many warm little things that Shi Zhiping has facilitated. Unconsciously, he, along with countless volunteers who have been silently dedicated, has become a small cornerstone for the development of civilization in the city.
"It's the best thing I've ever thought of"
At present, there are 10 volunteers in the Liulang Wenying Smile Pavilion, the oldest of whom is 77 years old, and there are also new Hangzhou people who use weekends to volunteer. Shi Zhiping said: "In our team, there are three people who have volunteered more than 20,000 hours, and I belong to the elderly volunteers who are coming from behind. ”
Over the years, the content of the volunteers' learning Xi has also kept pace with the times. At first, it was the most basic etiquette training, when taking up the post, women could not wear skirts, men could not wear shorts; later began to learn Xi knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if there was an accident involving pedestrians, volunteers could come to the rescue; during the Hangzhou Asian Games, in addition to daily directions and travel inquiries, but also to introduce the source of the mascot, familiar with the corresponding schedule of the competition venue......
"It's a joy to volunteer. Shi Zhiping said that every day facing the West Lake, the understanding of the West Lake is also increasing day by day.
The willow wave oriole is one of the ten scenic spots of West Lake. The Jujing Garden here was once the imperial garden of the Southern Song Dynasty. Shi Zhiping described that there are many kinds of willow tree forms, the branches with lush branches and leaves are so dense that they resemble the mane of a lion, which is called "lion willow"; the willow silk flutters like a drunken concubine, and it is called "drunken willow"; and the willow tree overlooking the willow tree from afar, like a young girl's raccoon yarn, is called "Huansha willow......
