Brief introduction

The Kresta II class cruiser was a first-class missile cruiser of the Soviet Navy during the Cold War, with the Soviet designation 1134A (Golden Eagle A-class). It is an anti-submarine modification of the Krista I-class cruiser, equipped with new RPK-3 Bura/SS-N-14 Flint anti-submarine missiles, SA-N-3 ship-to-air missiles, and new sonar. The Kresta II class, all built by the Zhdanov shipyard in St. Petersburg, entered service in the late 1960s and was quickly decommissioned after the end of the Cold War.

Anti-aircraft missiles

Type 1134-A ships were equipped with universal anti-aircraft missile systems M-11 "Storm" (later "Storm-M" and "Storm-N"). B-187 drum anti-aircraft missile launchers (four drums with six missiles each) are located in the central plane of the ship: one in the bow and one in the stern on the deck of the superstructure. Each launcher is a pair of stabilized pedestal-type installations, and the lower part of the missile defense system is suspended from a guide beam. One SAM salvo contains two missiles (four for both launchers). The interval between shots is 50 seconds. The ammunition consisted of 48 B-611 anti-aircraft missiles (SAMs) in two magazines.

Part of the complex is the universal fire control system 4R-60M "Grom-M" (two sets) and the regulatory control equipment "Grachka" (two sets). The bow "Grom-M" provided fire control for the URPK-3 "Metel" and after modernization for the URK-5 "Rastrub". SAM : firing range - 6-33.5 km, firing height - 0.1-25 km. The subsequent modernization of the system ("Storm-M", 1972; "Storm-N", 1980) gave it the ability to fire at ultra-low-altitude targets, and the "Storm-N" also had the ability to intercept low-flying anti-ship missiles.

Anti-submarine missiles

The main anti-submarine armament of large anti-submarine ships of the 134-A type is the second-generation anti-submarine missile system URPK-3 "Myrtle", with a firing interval of 6 minutes. There were two missiles in the salvo. Reloading can only be done at the base. The anti-submarine missile system can be used at any speed, the flight control system of the URPK-3 missile is shared with the fire control system of the M-11 anti-aircraft missile and is equipped with a nuclear warhead. Rocket-torpedoes can also be equipped with conventional warheads], torpedoes in search / approach mode with a speed of 25/40 knots 833 mm caliber 85R guided anti-submarine missile torpedoes with a missile range of 6 to 55 km, AT-2U self-guided torpedoes with a range of 8 km. The missile flies at Mach 0.95 (entered service in 1973). The complex includes two four-barreled unguided fixed-deck launchers KT-M-1134A or KT-100 launch boxes

During the modernization of the 80s of the 20th century, four ships of this type were equipped with new, more advanced universal missile systems URK-5 "Rastrob"

Rocket

The rocket systems installed on the ship are designed to destroy enemy submarines and torpedoes. It includes two twelve-barreled launchers RBU-6000 "Smerch-2" in the bow and two six-barreled launchers in the stern RBU -1000 "Smerch-3". The ammunition of the RBU-6000 consisted of 144 rounds of 212-mm 119.5 kg RGB-60 rockets, stored vertically on shelves in the cellar. The ammunition capacity of the RBU-1000 is 60 rounds of 300 mm 196 kg RSL-10 rockets. Target designation for the RBU is issued by the ship's hydroacoustic station and transmitted to the Burya control system for sighting devices

torpedo

The ship's torpedo armament, designed to destroy enemy submarines in the near zone (6-8 km), was side-mounted on the bow deck with two five-tube torpedo tubes, with a total ammunition load of 10 torpedoes and firing angles of 60° forward and 50° backward. There were no spare torpedoes. The torpedo launch control system is "Tifon-1134B". When the sea state does not exceed 5 points and the target speed does not exceed 60 knots, the torpedo weapon ABEAM can be used (it is possible to fire a 2-4-5 torpedo salvo). The standard armament was as follows: six (four) 53-65 torpedoes and four (six) SET-65 torpedoes

artillery

Two 57-mm two automatic cannons of the AK-725 type and two systems of fire control devices MR-103 "Bars". The purpose of the ship's main caliber guns is to fire at air targets, destroy small sea targets, destroy floating mines, manpower and shore targets. The ammunition capacity is 4400 rounds.

Small-caliber anti-aircraft guns, 30 mm six-barreled automatic guns, AK-630, four pieces. One six-barreled machine gun has an ammunition capacity of 2000 rounds. Fire control system - radar MR-123 "Vympel-A" (not installed on the S-721 - S724)]. The maximum firing range is 8100 meters, and the shooting height is 5000 meters.

helicopter

Inside the aft deck (semi-recessed) hangar with dimensions of 12.5×4.8×5.5 m, a helicopter Ka-25PL (in the 80s of the 20th century, was Ka-25Ts helicopters). The hangar has a device for lifting helicopters, and the lift 10×8m platform is illuminated with lighting fixtures. There is a helicopter launch command post, equipped with a short-range navigation and helicopter landing system. Type 1134-B ships are also equipped with a helicopter maintenance system.

Aviation ammunition includes: 5 aviation torpedoes, 4 PLAB-250-120 bombs, 8 PLAB-50 bombs, 2 RYU-2 (nuclear depth charges), 54 RSL-NM Chinara (or "Zheton"), 15 "Float-1A", 10 each of OMAB-25-12D and OMAB-25-8N naval bombs. Ammunition and special ammunition depots for helicopters are located in rooms adjacent to the hangar

About the introduction of jamming bomb launchers

Two 140 mm caliber barrels are installed side by side in the ZIF-121 turret, with a horizontal rotation range of 170 ° on the left and right, a rotation speed of 40 ° / s, a barrel pitch range of -12 ° ~ +64 °, and a movement speed of 30 ° / s. The set weighs 3.6 tons, not including ammunition, and is stored below deck with 200 rounds of rockets, with an automatic loader to load the shells, which supports the turret to fire at a rate of 15 salvos per minute

ZIF-121 can use 3 types of ammunition

The TSP-47 is a radar jamming bomb that, after launch, explodes and throws a large amount of chaff at a distance, forming a "cloud" area close to the size of a warship, which will jam the guidance radar and allow the missile to attack false targets.

TST-47 is an infrared jamming munition, which will quickly form a high-temperature pyrotechnic cloud after exploding at a predetermined distance, it can imitate the thermal signature of a warship, deceive the seeker of heat hunting, and its combat range can reach up to 6000 meters, and the maximum height can reach 1000 meters.

The TSTV-47 is a television jamming missile used to jam a television-guided missile, which ejects a container at a predetermined location, and when it falls, it forms an aerosol cloud above the water.

Each system can prepare 100 bombs, and can jam 5~7 incoming missiles at the same time.
