Thallium poisoning

Thallium poisoning is mainly caused by the ingestion of substances containing thallium compounds, resulting in a toxic reaction. The toxicity of thallium to mammals is higher than that of lead, mercury and other metal elements, and is comparable to arsenic, and its minimum lethal dose to adults is 12mg/kg body weight, and to children is 8.8~15mg/kg body weight.

Thallium poisoning is generally divided into acute and chronic, acute thallium poisoning generally occurs when thallium and thallium salts are ingested, and chronic thallium poisoning is due to the enrichment of thallium in animals and plants, entering the human body through the food chain, or due to occupational reasons when thallium enters the human body, resulting in poisoning. The symptoms of acute and chronic thallium poisoning are similar, mainly manifested by gastrointestinal reactions and acral abnormalities, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, numbness of the limbs, limb pain, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, hair loss, coma, blindness, and even death.

According to relevant data, exposure to thallium-containing dust for two hours can lead to acute thallium poisoning. In addition, mining and other reasons will cause soil and drinking water pollution, which can easily lead to acute or chronic thallium poisoning caused by local residents ingesting thallium-containing compounds through diet.

In the event of thallium poisoning, rescue should be carried out in time, and the treatment principles are generally disengagement, blocking absorption, and accelerating excretion. This is followed by detoxification with Prussian blue and sodium thiosulfate, which react with thallium to form an insoluble substance that excretes thallium from the body. For patients with severe symptoms and urgent conditions, hemoperfusion may be used to remove thallium from the blood, but attention should be paid to the patient's clotting.
