In winter, all kinds of fires are frequent, and many inconspicuous hidden dangers may cause serious fires and even endanger lives. Do you know how powerful a cigarette butt can be? Recently, Xuhui Fire demonstrated the harm of littering unextinguished cigarette butts through three sets of experiments.
The first set of experiments simulated an unextinguished cigarette butt being thrown into a trash can containing combustibles such as paper towels. The paper towel where the cigarette butt touched began to smoke. In less than 1 minute, there was a smoldering situation in the garbage can. After another 2 minutes, an open flame appeared.
The second set of experiments simulated a scene in which someone downstairs was drying quilts, and the upstairs resident threw an unextinguished cigarette butt out of the window. After about 7 minutes, an open flame appeared on the quilt and burned.
The third set of experiments simulated a scenario in which someone threw an unextinguished cigarette butt on a cardboard box piled up in a hallway. The cardboard was gradually ignited, and after about 3 minutes, an open flame appeared.
Although the cigarette butt is small, the "fire" is endless. A cigarette usually burns for about 10 minutes, and discarded cigarette butts burn for about 1 to 4 minutes depending on how long it is. The surface temperature of cigarette butts is 200 °C ~ 300 °C, and the core temperature of a burning cigarette can reach 700 °C ~ 800 °C, while the ignition point of most combustibles is lower than this temperature, such as the ignition point of paper is 130 °C, the ignition point of natural rubber is 129 °C, the ignition point of cotton is 210 °C ~ 255 °C, and the ignition point of polyester fiber is 390 °C. The temperature in the center of the cigarette butt is 2 to 5 times the ignition point of the above substances, and these items can easily ignite.
