Spandex/Elastane (spandex), commonly known as Lycra, is an elastic fiber invented by DuPont in 1958. Spandex is a stretch fiber rather than a fabric, so it can't be used on its own, it has to be used with other fabrics.
First, the advantages of spandex
1. Excellent elasticity
The strength of spandex is 2-3 times higher than that of latex yarn, its elasticity can stretch 5-8 times the space, the fiber density is also very fine, and it is resistant to chemical degradation, so spandex is the main material for the production of swimsuits, sportswear, tights, elastic pants, etc., and there will be no strong and obvious sense of pressure after being made into clothes, and it can quickly return to its original shape after stretching.
2. Spandex feels soft, smooth and comfortable, and it feels comfortable to wear after being made into clothes, and it fits the body curve.
3. Good chemical stability, wear-resistant, age-resistant, long-term wear is not easy to show old, sweat resistance, seawater resistance, good dyeing is not easy to fade.
Second, the shortcomings of spandex
1. The hygroscopicity is relatively poor, it cannot absorb water, and it is difficult to dry automatically once it is wet
2. Spandex cannot be used to make clothes alone, and a small amount of fabric must be mixed for blending to obtain good comfort, elasticity, etc.
3. The heat resistance is relatively poor, it is not breathable to wear in summer, and the skin is easy to sweat
Third, the use of spandex
Most spandex will be used for core-spun yarn, and the outer fiber composed of natural fibers has good moisture absorption, and only 1%-10% spandex filament is needed to produce high-quality elastic core-spun yarn.
In addition, spandex is widely used to make stretch knits, sportswear, medical fabrics, military equipment, and the stretch parts of spacesuits.
