A photo of Yuanyuan, the landlord's grandfather, and Silva

Yuanyuan, France, dog for 2 years, golden retriever

If you want to buy a dog in France, you must first go through a careful review of the kennel.

Silva was a gift from my landlord's grandfather when the kennel gave the landlord a phone interview.

Details like, where are you from? Where to stay? How big is the house? Have you ever had a dog before? Why do you want to raise a Golden Retriever? How old do all the dogs that have been raised before live, and what is the state? Is there a park near home? How many times a day do you think you have to walk your dog? What do you do and do you have a stable income? How much time do you spend with your dog each day?

After answering these questions, the initial review is passed. If you want to adopt a dog, the conditions are more stringent.

The kennel is large, generally in the countryside outside the city, with a yard at the back. From next year, cats and dogs will be banned in pet stores in France, where animals are kept in small spaces. In the kennel, the dogs can play in the yard, and the big and small dogs are kept separately, and they can run and play freely on the grass.

First time I met Silva in the kennel and grandpa was holding him

In order to regulate purebred dogs, France has established the Lof (Livre des origines français) system, which is a register created in 1885, and only dogs registered with the LOF can be certified as purebred dogs, and purebred dogs will have their own pedigree certificates.

For example, my dog Silva has a family tree that tells you who his parents, grandparents, and grandparents are.

In order to make it easier to sort animals in the pedigree book, the SSC (Société Centrale Canine) has a set of rules for naming animals, and all purebred animals (except horses) born in each year must be named with the same letter, and each year is rotated in order.

The year of Silva's birth was the year of the French dog, and her grandfather went through three hundred operas, the French dictionary of Larousse, the German dictionary, and the great Latin dictionary before finally taking the name.

Just like the human zodiac, the dog meets and asks, brother, what are you? The dog on the other side said that it belonged to S, so you know what year it was born.

When Silva first arrived home

When Sliva was two months old, we would come and pick it up. At that time, it had already had its first vaccine and had a microchip.

The kennel will tell us in detail how much food and how many meals the dog needs to eat every day, get vaccinated once a year, do a physical examination, and tell us that he has congenital ichthyosis, etc. We took a whole stack of papers from the kennel and signed them before we could take Silva.

Silva's dog passport

After three months of rabies vaccination, you can leave the country with your passport

In France, if you don't keep a dog well, abuse or abandon it, you can face up to 5 years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros, which is a serious matter.

I've seen the news of a baby being bitten by a dog before. If a dog hurts someone, the owner will definitely be punished, because you have not taught it well, and the owner needs to send the dog for a rigorous and detailed assessment - assessing the danger level, testing for rabies virus, and depending on the situation, the owner may be required to undergo training.

It is possible to euthanize a dog only in the event of a very serious and urgent danger, on the advice of a veterinarian. If charged with manslaughter, the owner could also face jail time and fines. Therefore, in the event of an accident, there is still a law to follow in the implementation.

Yuan Yuan celebrates Silva's second birthday with his grandfather

After establishing all the above norms, in fact, dogs are fully integrated into daily life, and everyone is very friendly to dogs.

Dogs are allowed to get on the subway, and they have to buy half-price tickets just like children. Dogs can go almost everywhere except for supermarkets that sell food, and I have basically not encountered restaurants and hotels that do not accept dogs.

If it's a large dog like us, you have to take it with you when you ride the subway. Although it does not have to be worn on the dog's mouth, you need to make sure that you have it if necessary.

Grandpa goes out for a walk on Silva

Because France has a long history of dog breeding, they even treat dogs more respectfully than people.

Once, the landlord grandfather helped us go out to walk the dog, he met a person at the door of the house, saw the grandfather with a dog of a few months, and asked him, why do you still have such a small dog at such an age? If you can't survive the dog, the dog will be very lonely, and you are irresponsible.

It was only after I started raising dogs that I felt accepted by the community.

I live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of white people, and since I lived in this community, very few people have talked to me, but since I got a dog, everyone has been very enthusiastic to come and talk to me, and they will feel that when you start having a dog, it means that you have a stable life, you want to stay, and you are here to join the family.

I feel that having a dog brings me the best life I have ever imagined in my life. I stayed in France largely for the sake of my dogs. A puppy's love is always sincere and passionate, and it will always make you feel needed and relied on.

It was only after I had a dog that I had a home.

Yoda goes for a walk

Marsha, Germany, has been raising dogs for almost 4 years, Labrador

I did a lot of homework before raising Yoda. Raising a dog in Germany is like raising a child, you don't make an easy decision, you have to think about whether and when to have a dog.

For example, in Frankfurt, where we live, you have to pay 90 euros a year for dogs, which is more expensive for larger dogs than for small dogs, and more if you have a second dog (180 euros), and 900 euros if you are a dangerous dog.

When the dog has a tax number, it will be given a small sign with a tax number written on it, which will be hung around its neck. Because when the German police are on patrol, they may ask for your tax ID number, and if you don't have one, you will get into trouble.

The laws in Germany are very strict, so you really have to be very careful and nervous.

Doctors and dog trainers will advise not to leave the dog alone at home for more than 4 hours, otherwise it is prone to depression and nervousness, so you also need to consider whether the dog can be brought to the company.

Yoda at home

Our neighbor, an old German lady, saw that we were starting to have a dog, and she came over to me and asked me a lot of questions, such as, how are you going to get a dog? How do you usually take care of it? Do you keep your dog home when you go to work? I said I'd take it with me. And she said, that's okay, but you know what, dogs get tired on the road.

In Germany, if a neighbor finds that the dog next door is kept on the balcony, outside in the wind and rain, or the owner is not walking the dog, they will definitely call the police because they think it is a responsibility, an obligation.

If the dog owner abuses the dog, he will be fined nearly 200,000 yuan, and even face criminal penalties, so in Germany, if you can't take care of the dog, there may really be a cost of bankruptcy, and you can't keep a dog in the future.

After calling the police, the dog will be taken to a specialized animal shelter and they will help the dog find a better owner.

Abandonment of dogs is even more unlikely, abandonment is a criminal offense, not only will you face a huge fine, once you have this kind of criminal record, it is estimated that it will be difficult to find a job, because everyone is very fond of dogs and will not want to work with such people.

Marsha takes Yoda in the dining room, and it sits down obediently

In my previous company, I would take my dog to work on the subway every day, and Yoda would lie on the ground obediently, because everyone loves dogs, so passengers are quite used to dogs. When I arrived at the company, he slept while I was working, but I had to take him out for a walk whenever I had the chance.

Later, because it was too hot for the dog to walk on the road in the summer, and it was still inconvenient for people to come and go in the office, I changed my current job, and now I am working from home.

When you go out with a dog, if you don't leash and are found, it seems that the maximum fine will be 10,000 euros, which is equivalent to 7 to 80,000 yuan.

In addition, we have to purchase dog liability insurance, so if a dog bite occurs, the compensation will also be handled by the insurance company.

Marsha takes Yoda to see the sea together

Because we were raising a dog for the first time, we chose the more well-behaved Labrador. But being well-behaved does not mean that it is not lively, before the dogs greet each other, the owners must communicate with each other, and the owners say yes, so they will let them touch each other's noses.

Even if both owners feel that their dogs are docile, it is possible that the two dogs will not like each other, so when the dogs may have a conflict, the leash can ensure that they are pulled away at this time.

Germans are very dog-friendly, and I found that this perception was cultivated from an early age.

Sometimes when we go to the park and meet children, they see an animal that is bigger than themselves, and they are usually scared and want to know about it. Parents will crouch down and tell them, don't be afraid. At this time, the child will let down some guard, I let the dog sit down, and the parent will ask the child to come and pet the dog after asking my permission.

Yoda and Marsha go to the vineyard to play

Dog beds and dog bowls will be prepared in advance

One time I was walking down the road and the trail was only for one person, so I asked Yoda to sit down and let the grandmother and the kids on the other side pass first, and they said, "No, the dog goes first." "I was very impressed. The same is true for the elevator, whoever is in the order will be first, and I won't have to wait for the next one because I have a dog.

When Yoda came to the house, taking care of it was like taking care of a child, and I went through every stage of his growth with him. After I got it back from my mother, I was her mother.

I have given a lot, but I have also gained a lot, the dog only recognizes you, it is waiting for you to come home at any time, wants to do everything with you, it will never fail your family.

Million at East Coast Park, Singapore

Qianqian, Singapore, 2 years of dog ownership, corgi

My husband and I have always been in a foreign country, he is doing a PhD in Singapore, so I also left Beijing to live in Singapore, and since last year I have been planning to send my puppy Million to Singapore as well.

Because Singapore is a rabies-free area, dogs from China need to go through various quarantine certificates first, and after entering the country, they will also undergo a 30-day quarantine at the quarantine facility provided by the AVS (The Animal & Veterinary Service).

It is particularly difficult to make an appointment for a vacancy in the isolation center, and it is necessary to make an appointment six months in advance. I found an agent to transport pets to help me take Million in and out of the country and go through various formalities, and I made an appointment for a vacant spot in the quarantine center in January this year.

Earlier this year, Million took a carpool from Shandong to Guangzhou, where he spent 10 days in a dog kindergarten because he needed to do some tests in advance.

Then I had to fly to Singapore, which was the part I was most worried about, because it was completely lost from the beginning of the customs, the plane only flew for five hours, but plus the time to enter and exit the customs, there was no news for a day, I don't know how it was, it was not healthy, and I was so nervous that I kept sending messages to the intermediary.

Million at the AVS Quarantine Facility

It can be let out on the fenced fake lawn for 15 minutes

Once in Singapore, the agent will pick up the dog, undergo AVS inspection at immigration, and then send it to a quarantine center. Once we got to quarantine, we were able to go and see Million.

Dogs need to be vaccinated against rabies before coming to Singapore, and they need to be given an extra shot at the quarantine center.

Each puppy in the quarantine is kept in a separate room and cannot touch each other, just like a person is isolated, with a small fenced lawn at the back. The owner can visit for 2 hours from Monday to Friday and 3 hours on Saturday, and can take the puppy out for 15 minutes while the owner is around.

The staff will feed the dogs, clean their dog toilets, and clean the rooms every day according to the owner's requirements.

Million in a small room at the AVS isolation facility

In Singapore, you have to get a new dog license, because Million has been neutered before that, so the price is S$15 per year, and dogs that are not neutered have to pay S$90 a year.

Once we were out of quarantine, we took Million home. My family lives in an apartment, which has a more lenient dog rules, but in Singapore's HDB flat, each household can only have one small dog, and many dogs are not allowed, such as Shiba Inu.

The requirements for adopting a large dog are also relatively high, I have a friend who wants to adopt an ancient herd, but the requirement must live in a single-family, with a yard family to adopt, his family lives on the first floor of the apartment, although there is also a yard, but not a single-family house, so it is not eligible.

Million and Merlion pictured

Dogs are allowed in most parks and attractions in Singapore, except for some areas with wild animals and rare plants. The open-air music festival and concert dogs are all accessible, which is an experience I didn't imagine before.

Pet-friendly restaurants can basically take puppies to sit outdoors, but there will be some requirements indoors, such as some shopping malls will stipulate that puppies' feet cannot fall to the ground, and they must be in the car or held.

Also, puppies can't get on public transport, so when we take Million out, we all need to take pet-friendly taxis like Grab Pet, which are quite expensive. Sometimes it's not very convenient, I remember one time we were in Sentosa, after 10pm, we couldn't get a taxi at all, so we had to walk a long way home with my dog.

Million partying with the other dogs

In the event of a dog bite, the bitten person needs to provide evidence (such as surveillance footage) to report to the police, and if confirmed, the dog owner must be held liable, which may result in a fine of up to S$5,000 and a compensation of up to S$2,000 to be paid to the victim, even if the dog owner is not negligent or unaware that the dog is aggressive.

I've seen a sign near my home where you can be fined up to S$5,000 if you don't leash and up to S$1,000 if you don't pick up.

Therefore, in Singapore, everyone generally defaults to leashes, and some dogs will go to school, so there is generally no situation where dogs hurt people. I think if a dog bites someone, it must be the owner's failure to restrain it, not the dog's fault.

I have hardly ever seen a stray dog on the road in Singapore. They have many dog rescue organizations, and at many dog party sites, they will also set aside an area for dog rescue organizations, and they will take the rescued dogs to the scene to find adopters.

Fried chicken in the restaurant

Olivia, USA, 3 years of dog breeding, Fa Dou

Many American families choose to adopt a dog, but because I was a first-time dog, I was afraid that I would not be able to deal with the special needs of some puppies, so I decided to find a breeder to buy a magic dog.

There is an official website in the United States called AKC (American Kennel Club), and the breeders registered on this website are generally reliable.

At that time, the law was very popular in the United States, and finally found a breeder in Atlanta. I was transparent about the fact that the breeder would live stream the puppy's status on social media, and when it was eight weeks old, I paid some extra money to send it from Atlanta to California and pick it up at the airport.

I need to sign a contract with the breeder, he has to ensure that the puppy will be vaccinated, injected with chips, dewormed, etc. within 8 weeks, and issue a health report.

The breeder asked us to spay the puppy within a year, and if I didn't, I would have to pay more for a breeding right. The accountability between us is probably maintained for less than a year.

Olivia and fried chicken by the sea

I'm a big traveler, I live in California, but I often go to Seattle, San Diego, and I want to bring fried chicken with me. However, if the pet is on the plane, it must be put in the kennel and cannot be with the owner.

If your dog is a service dog and can be kept quiet, it can lie down on the owner's lap or in front of the foot. I wanted to fly with me with the fried chicken, so I signed him up for a service dog training class.

At that time, I researched different training schools in detail, and choosing a school is very similar to the process of a human mother finding a school for her child.

The educational philosophy of each training school is different, there are about three types, the first is a form of pure violence, a collar that will give the dog an electric shock, this series has been brushed off by me, the second is the balance teaching model, which refers to half of the encouragement, but if you don't do it well, it is punishment, and the last is pure encouragement education.

In the end, I chose a school that was very encouraging, and the teacher paid more attention to the relationship between humans and dogs, and he believed that giving instructions to dogs was a means of building trust and tacit understanding.

When the fried chicken is trained, it is practiced to "stay" and wait for the password

Fried chicken learned a lot of simple commands there, such as turning in circles, going backwards, walking left, walking right, touching, stopping, etc., because Fadou's physical strength is relatively poor, half of the time is learning instructions, and the other half of the time will also practice agility, going up and down between various obstacles, and climbing stairs.

We took 20 lessons together, and after a test, the teacher will help you come up with a service dog report. Once the training is complete, a certificate from a doctor is also required before you can apply to become a service dog.

With the status of a service dog, the dog can provide some assistance and services, the most common being a guide dog.

Sign two reports before boarding – certifying that the dog has been trained as a service dog and does not go to the toilet on board the aircraft. There are quite a few dog toilets at the airport in San Francisco, so it was quite convenient for me, and the flight attendant would ask him if he wanted something to drink when he got on the plane.

Take the fried chicken on the plane with you

After it becomes a service dog, there is basically no place where it cannot go, for example, the landlord cannot refuse the service dog to enter under any excuse.

I think Fadou has received a lot of prejudice, probably because of its name.

Everyone seems to think that this dog is very fierce and aggressive, but in fact, its teeth are not even a centimeter, the bite force is also super poor, the teeth are not very good, the first minute or two may be very energetic, very nervous, but the endurance may be five minutes, so it is really the most suitable dog to keep at home.

I've always been a more self-disciplined person, and I'm not used to giving, so I was a little uncomfortable when I first raised fried chicken, and I found that how to raise a dog is such a big workload and has to worry so much.

But slowly I learned to give, became more and more relaxed, and became more and more understanding of all kinds of people who are afraid of dogs, don't want to have dogs, and people who love dogs. It has made me better and more peaceful, and I don't regret having a puppy.
