The War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea was a major war after the founding of New China, and it was also a classic battle in which the weak defeated the strong, demonstrating the national prestige of New China. In this war, people often think of the Battle of Shangganling, but in fact, there is another battle that can be called the fiercest battle to resist US aggression and aid Korea, which neither China nor the United States wants to mention. This battle was the Battle of Changjin Lake.
Changjin Lake is the largest lake in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula and one of the coldest regions of the Korean Peninsula. In 1950, when the volunteers entered the area, it was the coldest winter in 50 years, and the temperature even dropped to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Faced with such a harsh environment, the volunteer soldiers did not have enough winter clothes because they were in a hurry, and many people wore only thin clothes. In this bitter cold, the volunteers frostbitten 800 people on the first day they entered Korea.
In this case, the PVA 9th Corps was sent to destroy the Watergate Bridge, which was the last retreat route for American troops and a necessary place to pass. In order to prevent the US military engineers from rebuilding the bridge, the volunteers each carried 50 kilograms of explosives and risked their lives to blow up the foundation of the Watergate Bridge. However, the U.S. military demonstrated strong logistical capabilities, transporting bridges from Japan overnight and rebuilding new bridges in two days. In such a difficult environment, the volunteer soldiers ate frozen hard potatoes, relying on strong will and charging again and again, successfully prevented the retreat of the American army. During the retreat of the American troops, the volunteers set up an ambush to attack, but these soldiers were unmoved when the American troops approached, and it was not until the American troops approached that they had been in ambush in the ice and snow for six days, and they had already frozen into ice sculptures. This scene made the US commander also unable to admire and pay tribute to these tough opponents.
Although decades have passed since the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the Chinese people will never forget these Chinese soldiers who fought bravely in the ice and snow.
