Iraq: A fire "turned into a funeral" and at least 100 people were killed in a wedding party in Iraq
On September 27, a fire broke out in a wedding hall in Karakosh in northern Iraq, killing at least 100 people and injuring 150, sparking anger over the venue's lack of security measures.
Iraq's civil defense ministry said fireworks were set off at the venue in Hamdaniyah district, northeast of Nineveh governorate, and set up a commission of inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.
"The hall does not meet safety standards. The ceiling collapsed on the people in the hall because of the fireworks," Interior Minister Abdel Amir Shamari told reporters on Wednesday.
The newlyweds at the wedding lost her three brothers and her mother-in-law, and her newlyweds turned into hell when they danced for the first time.
The fire broke out in the Hamdaniya area of Iraq's Nineveh governorate, about 205 miles northwest of Baghdad. There is no official word on the cause of the blaze, but Kurdish television news channel Rudaw aired footage showing pyrotechnics firing flames from the floor and lighting chandeliers.
Iraqi Civil Defense said in a statement: "Due to the use of highly flammable, low-cost building materials, the fire caused the hall to partially collapse, which collapsed within minutes when the fire broke out. ”
