During the Southern and Northern Dynasties of the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei tribe arose in the north, and in 340, the Daiguo was established, and after the fall of the state, in 386, the State was restored to establish the Northern Wei, and the capital was Shengle (and the north of Shangtucheng Village, Linger County).

During the Zhenguan period, the Tang army defeated the Turks at Baidao (present-day Centipede Dam, north of Hohhot). In 708, Tang established three surrendered cities in the Hetao area: east, middle, and west.

In 1694, the Qing Dynasty built an outer city outside the original Three Niangzi City, called Naturalization City, and built the new city of Suiyuan City. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Naturalization and Suiyuan were merged and called Guisui.
In 1914, the Suiyuan Special District was established, and suiyuan was stationed in Suiyuan. In 1928, Suiyuan was established as a province and guisui city was established as the provincial capital. In 1954, Suiyuan Province was merged into the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Suiyuan City was renamed Hohhot City, which was the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
