Xu Beihong is one of the most admired artists since the 20th century, and in his mind, Ren Bonian is the undisputed first. As early as when Xu Beihong was young, his father Xu Dazhang had copied Bo Nian's works, so he had heard of Bo Nian's name for a long time. In the early stages of learning Chinese painting, Xu Beihong's painting style was also heavily influenced by Bo Nian.
Later, Xu Beihong was fortunate enough to meet Wu Zhongxiong, a descendant of Bonian's son-in-law, and received some gifts of Bonian's posthumous works and drawings. He continued to collect Bo Nian's works and eventually accumulated nearly a hundred. In the summer of 1928, Xu Beihong had just returned from studying in France, and he and Wu Zhongxiong visited Bo Nian's son Ren Kuan, and also got a photographic portrait of Bo Nian when he was 49 years old.
In 1950, Xu Beihong wrote the "Ren Bo Nian Commentary", which gave Bo Nian a very high evaluation. He called Bo Nian an outstanding artist who was really good at freehand painting in ancient and modern times, regarded him as the first Chinese painters, and even designated him as the first person in the painting world of Chinese painters in the post-Shizhou period. Xu Beihong believes that Bo Nian is not an academic, but a lyric poet, and his works are full of emotion and have high artistic value.
