——A brief review of Mr. Huang Mingqian's desert landscape paintings

As a historical witness of "23,000 miles of sketching", the famous landscape painter Mr. Huang Mingqian has the orthodox "New Jinling School" academic lineage, and at the same time has his own unique artistic language in the exploration of Chinese painting - desert landscape painting. This not only has the ability to "fill in" the landscape theme of Chinese painting (praised by Xue Yongnian), but also opens up the expressiveness of traditional pen and ink language, and continues and sublimates the unique pattern and atmosphere of Chinese painting "life drawing".

Life drawing is a familiar and timeless topic for Chinese painters. But all accomplished painters are inseparable from life drawing, which is the pillar of inheritance and development, and the hub of tradition and innovation, which has been the case throughout the ages. Because any art form has people's subjective reflection of natural foreign objects, it requires the painter to face the subjective expression after facing the objective, this process is not only a record of natural mountains and rivers, but also a creation of imagination and search. We Chinese our own unique understanding of "life drawing": cultivating all things in nature into pen and ink interest, becoming an important way to continuously temper one's own mind and form a pen and ink personality language after inheriting the traditional essence of predecessors. Therefore, we Chinese landscape painters often call life drawing "teacher creation", that is, advocating the origin of nature with a sense of awe, exploring the secret realm of heaven and earth, because only "tens of thousands of books" can "be as true" (Jing Hao), and only "traveling thousands of miles" (Dong Qichang) can "mountains and rivers meet the rest of the gods and traces" (Shi Tao), so if landscape painters want to "build hills and valleys in the chest, that is, from pen and ink", they cannot be separated from life drawing, which is also the course that successive generations of landscape painters must practice.

In recent times, Chinese painting has faced the dual pressure of national adherence and contemporary innovation, and the group of painters represented by Fu Baoshi in Jiangsu has solved this problem very well, and created a number of landscape paintings with deep traditional pen and ink forms and strong life atmosphere. One of the most important opportunities was the "23,000 Li Sketching" of the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Chinese Painting in 1956, which led to the rise of the "New Jinling School". Adhering to the spirit of the "New Jinling School", Mr. Huang Mingqian systematically sorted, summarized and summarized the laws, rules and artistic expression methods of desert sketching around the new theme of "desert landscape" and scientific "geology" epistemology as the guiding ideology. This is all deeply influenced by his benefactor master Bouldering, especially the key to Fu Baoshi's sketching: not only pay attention to the selection and description of objective scenes, but also pay more attention to the understanding and reflection of subjective thinking on scenes, emphasizing the role of the author's thoughts and feelings. In the whole process of landscape painting, the requirements of scene integration must be implemented. 1 In Huang Mingqian's desert landscape vividly reflects the "scene blending" life atmosphere and era characteristics, Huang Mingqian did not abandon the traditional position because of scientific vision, and even scientifically used the "realism" factor in the tradition, so Huang Mingqian's "desert landscape" is different from those Chinese painting realist reformers, but looks at the humanistic temperament of the desert with a scientific attitude, and at the same time this is not a mechanical and indifferent observation object. Under the premise of scientific attitude, it is infused with the traditional pen and ink spirit and personal emotions of the painter.

In addition to life drawing, I think that Mr. Huang Mingqian's development of the language of landscape painting is very important to focus on the brush and ink expression of desert subjects. This kind of subject matter is unprecedented, and it also means that the expression of pen and ink requires continuous experimentation and innovation, so it can be asserted that the desert landscape painter who can form his own artistic language and expression object to achieve the unity of form and content is Huang Mingqian. If Mr. Fu Baoshi is famous for "bouldering" in pen and ink, then Huang Mingqian's "Desert Landscape" has made its own unique contribution to the continuation and expansion of the "New Jinling School" style in the new era with new themes and new brush and ink.

In short, with the convenience of human transportation, the Xunda of social life has brought modern people a broad vision that the ancients could not have imagined when looking at the world. When we look at the natural scene of the desert today, we are not only curious and awe of natural wonders, but also feel a cultural baptism and spiritual immersion in our thoughts. Mr. Huang Mingqian's lifelong model of "New Jinling School" and the artistic footprint of Mr. Baoshi of Master En has formed a unique Huang style "Desert Landscape Painting" step by step, which is really admirable and emotional. In his old age, there is still such artistic ambition and achievements, and one cannot but admire Mr. Huang Mingqian's vigorous artistic vitality and creativity, which will inevitably indicate that the spirit of the "New Jinling School" will be passed on and fruitful in the new century.
