The development process of artificial intelligence can be roughly divided into the following six stages:
- Initial development period (1956-early 60s of the 20th century): After the concept of artificial intelligence was proposed, a number of breakthrough research results were achieved, such as machine theorem proofs, checkers programs, etc., setting off the first climax of artificial intelligence development.
- Reflection on the development period (60s-early 70s of the 20th century): AI hit its first trough due to high expectations for AI and slow actual progress. Some difficult problems are exposed, such as natural language understanding, machine translation, common sense reasoning, etc.
- Application development period (early 70s-mid-80s of the 20th century): Expert systems emerged as an important application form of artificial intelligence, simulating the knowledge and experience of human experts to solve problems in specific fields. The success of expert systems in medical, chemical, geological and other fields has promoted the practical application of artificial intelligence.
- Trough period (mid-80s to early 90s of the 20th century): Due to the limitations of computer hardware and software technology, and the lack of sufficient data support, artificial intelligence has entered a trough period.
- Revival period (mid-90s to early 21st century): With the continuous development of computer hardware and software technology, as well as the accumulation of large amounts of data, artificial intelligence began to recover. The emergence of technologies such as machine learning and deep learning has made major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence in the fields of speech recognition, image recognition, and natural language processing.
- Boom period (early 21st century to present): With the continuous development of cloud computing, big data and other technologies, artificial intelligence has been more widely used. Applications such as machine translation, intelligent customer service, and autonomous driving have become an indispensable part of people's lives.
