The simplest basic division of art schools is:
1. Specific natural objects and human figures can be seen in the picture classified as figurative painting.
2. The division of unrecognizable concrete natural objects and human figures in the picture is - abstract painting.
It is now certain that abstract painting dates back 110 years, and the earliest practitioners and theorists of abstract painting were the Russian-born artists Kandinsky and Malevich.
Kandinsky began to think about such a problem: to attract visual attention, it is not necessary to have specific objects and content or even the plot of the story, the intensity and depth of color, the shape of the virtual and real size, the straight and thick lines, etc. will cause different stimuli to the vision, thus triggering different psychological feelings.
At this point, Kandinsky and Malevich pioneered abstract painting.
Our previous cognitive standard for painting good works is actually the cognitive standard of figurative painting: to portray the characters, objects and environment in the picture like a photo, we can design the internal logical connection between the character and the object and the environment, and freeze this connection like a movie picture.
Abstract painting is not a random graffiti, it still follows the common cognition and synaesthesia of human beings. To appreciate abstract painting, we must first cut off the interpretation path of figurative realistic painting from the brain.
If we think about it, babies have not yet learned to speak, but parents can accurately judge whether the baby is happy or unhappy, hungry or peeing according to the babbling pitch and the speed of sound. Adults, too, can judge the nature of laughter from the audio level, speed, and pause or not. The same is true of human behavior, dancing with joy and despondent, as well as animals.
These universal functional reactions in human beings are felt music, and the relaxed and joyful tunes must be fast, jumpy, and high-key, such as the folk music "A Hundred Birds and Phoenixes"; The grief and depressed tunes must be low, slow, and sluggish, such as cello "Death", erhu "Erquan Reflecting the Moon" and so on.
If figurative painting is song opera, then abstract painting is pure music, although there are no lyrics but can be appreciated through changes in tone, speed of sound, and beat.
For pure music, although there are not many people who can say the doorway, at least everyone can listen to it, and they can have their own feelings, even if they are different from others, this does not affect their own feeling process at all, and they will broaden each other's understanding in communication with other listeners.
With such a consensus, in fact, there is a premise to understand abstract painting. What needs to be done now is to put the elements of music into the elements of painting, and with this fit there is the key to understanding abstract painting.
We know that colors have psychological cues, and most of these hints are common to the whole world. For example: red enthusiasm and warning, black firmness and despair, white purity and vastness, green vitality and weakness, blue depth and sadness, pink cuteness and eroticism, etc.
Like the extended meaning of pure color, different shapes, sizes, directions, heights and lows will also have corresponding psychological hints, including the curvature, thickness, virtual reality, and urgency of the lines.
Figurative painting is to depict the external characteristics of specific objects, what kind of hairstyle, face, facial features, skin color;
Abstract painting describes the internal characteristics of concrete objects, what kind of personality, temper, what characteristics it has, calm or pompous, fortitude or weakness, impatience or warmth, and so on.
In terms of the expression of artistic language, abstract painting is not weaker than figurative painting, on the contrary, sometimes it is more powerful and resilient, bringing people more thinking level and imagination space. Don't underestimate the thinking imagination brought by implicit expression, it is the most detrimental to bring people imagination space.
The 5 levels of abstract painting:
1. With the universal psychology of pure painting elements, emphasize the spiritual core of concrete objects.
2. Divide the picture by geometry or geometry-like methods to form a design pure geometric composition, or give rhythm to music, or summarize specific objects.
3. Seek unique and uniquely recognizable symbols.
4. Pay more attention to the behavior and conceptualization of the painting process than the picture effect.
5. Try adding and substituting different materials, materials and media.
What kind of feeling the painting brings to you is your personal matter, and believe in this feeling, because this experience is private and belongs only to you. Appreciation, it doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. We can't always try to rely on the standard answer, the charm of art lies in the possibility of more interpretation brought by different experiencers, which is what we often say: a hundred Hamlets in a hundred people's hearts.
