Scientists have found "peach socks" on the ocean floor: heterodyloma are very low-level organisms

The bottom of the sea is a magical place, because as you explore deeper, you will see many new species that you have never met before. Some of them look like deep-sea trolls, and some of them are cute. Scientists have just unraveled a mystery that has been around for more than 60 years — a flat, slightly peach-colored worm-shaped creature discovered off the coast of Sweden in the 1950s. According to a study published Wednesday, the worm-shaped Xenoturbella species has struggled to be placed at the upper levels of the animal kingdom, but has been pinned "near the bottom of the evolutionary tree."

After 12 years of collection and research, scientists discovered four new species. The criteria were collected from the coasts of Mexico and California, and the researchers then anatomy and genetic analysis of them to identify the attribution of new breeds.

The most interesting point, of course, is that the creature looks a lot like clothes (peach-colored socks) or fried pastries that have been abandoned by humans. The study, which targets deep-sea species, has been published in the recently published journal Nature.

Extraordinary Deep-Sea Worm Species Discovered

The researchers note that some of them look like peach-colored socks, while another finding has been dubbed "Xenoturbella churro." These unusual species can range from flatworms to mollusks.

Scripps marine biologist and first author Greg Rouse said: "This study has far-reaching implications for how we understand the evolution of animals."

The invertebrates seem to enjoy appearing in the cold of the deep sea, hot vents, and whale carcasses: "They are very simple beasts, without brains, eyes, gills, and internal organs, and just open their mouths." The largest heterodoxa is 8 inches (about 20 cm) long."
