There is a saying in the Yueyang area of Hunan Province "Old Sparrow of Dongting Lake", which is used to describe a person who has gone through wind and waves, seen the world, and is sophisticated. Xie Yonghong's WeChat name is "Dongting Sparrow", he explained with a smile: "Several friends older than me use 'Dongting Lake Old Sparrow' as their WeChat name, so the word 'old' was removed. ”

Xie Yonghong is the director of the Dongting Lake Wetland Ecosystem Observation and Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The station was built in 2007, the site was selected in 2008, and it was completed in 2009, and he is the core figure in the construction of the station.

Since 2009, he and his team have been rooted in the Dongting Lake wetland for more than ten years, "taking the pulse of the treatment" to maintain the ecological balance and biodiversity of the local area. From the age of 36 to 50, he changed from a "scholar" to a scientific researcher who closely integrates scientific research and economic and social development, leading his team members to become a "dongting sparrow" who can withstand the challenges of wind and waves and protect the "kidney of the Yangtze River".

Located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, Dongting Lake, China's second largest freshwater lake, is known as the "kidney of the Yangtze River" because of its huge role in purifying the environment, regulating water levels and maintaining ecological balance.
