The Modhera Sun Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the sun god Surya in the village of Modhera in Mehasana, Mehasana district, Gujarat, India. It sits on the banks of the Pushpavati River and was founded in 1026-27 AD during the Chalukian dynasty. In this temple, a gemstone is set in the middle of the crown of the sun god. The entrance gate on the east side of this temple is laid out in such a way that the first rays of the sun fall directly on the jewel set in the center of the crown of the sun god, which illuminates the entire temple and creates a sacred atmosphere. In addition, there are 108 small shrines around the outer pond, which create a pleasant view at dusk and dawn. The temple complex is now a protected monumental structure and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
ILDL is privileged to illuminate such an ancient heritage complex through its range of projects. Luminaires with a color temperature of 2200K were used in the façade lighting application of the temple to mimic the warmth of the rising sun. In addition, on the façade of the Sabhamanḍapa or shrine hall, linear spotlights mounted on the railings of the perimeter boundary walls are also used to achieve the lighting effect of the shadow texture.
The walls of the entire building are evenly washed by linear wall washers installed on the floor. The trees in the background are illuminated in a very subtle way. The temple's Shikhara Pagoda is highlighted by multiple point light sources mounted on pillars. The central pond and the small shrine along its perimeter are emphasized by a point light source mounted on the base. Overall, when they are reflected on the tranquil water, the lighting arrangement of the entire complex creates a mesmerizing landscape effect.
