To nurture R&D talents in AI and other related fields, Alibaba Group and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore announced that the Alibaba Talent Program (ATP) will continue for its fifth year to support outstanding undergraduate and master's graduates pursuing doctoral (PhD) degrees.
The ATP scheme funds Singapore citizens and permanent residents to pursue a postgraduate degree in computing at Nanyang Technological University while completing an industrial research and development project at Alibaba.
This provides students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at one or more of Alibaba's research institutions, including the Alibaba-Nanyang Technological University Joint Research Institute (JRI), the first of its kind outside Alibaba's headquarters in China. Each PhD student has at least one supervisor from Nanyang Technological University and one co-supervisor from Alibaba.
New applicants can join the program in the first semester of August 2023 or the second semester in January 2024.

Application conditions
- Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident;
- Meet the university's admission requirements;
- Obtain a bachelor's or master's degree in computer/engineering, electrical, electronics, mathematics, physics, medical/life sciences, or a related field (preferred, but not limited to);
- Plans to study in areas such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, cloud computing, optimization, data analytics, databases, cryptography and security, quantum computing, 5G and 5G enabling technologies, digital twins, online streaming, AR/VR, online collaborative work and learning, video coding and analytics, health/medical AI, educational AI, etc.;
- Expect to spend at least 50% of their time working on research projects at Alibaba's premises;

NTU Singapore and Alibaba Group officially launched the Alibaba-Nanyang Technological University Joint Research Institute (JRI) in February 2018. This is Alibaba's first AI research institute outside of China.
The joint institute aims to combine Nanyang Technological University's AI technology with Alibaba's leading technologies, including natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, machine learning and cloud computing, to explore further technological breakthroughs and real-life AI solutions.
The Joint Research Institute will promote the frontier development of artificial intelligence, transforming the current technology-centric AI research concept into a human-centered concept. The goal is to make AI more effective, convenient and inclusive to meet the needs of future societies in terms of agelessness, new lifestyles and human-centered mobility.
These AI and cloud technologies will be developed and tested at Nanyang Technological University's Smart Campus to prove the effectiveness of the solution before it is introduced to markets in Singapore and the rest of the world.
The program dovetails with Singapore's ambition to nurture AI and data science talent to support the country's vision of a "smart nation" and its transition to 'Industry 4.0'.
