Nanyang Technological University began to restrict study tours to the campus

Studying in Singapore continues to be popular!

As a cosmopolitan city-state, Singapore attracts students from all over the world with its high-quality education system, good public safety, and stable social order.

However, due to Singapore's visa-free policy and China's double reduction policy, more and more people travel to various universities in Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore recently announced that it will restrict study tour groups from entering the campus.

At the same time, this policy will also prompt the study abroad industry to pay more attention to improving service quality and providing students with a better study abroad experience.

Cause of the incident

Recently, the surge in the number of visitors on the campuses of the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has caused a lot of inconvenience to students and caused widespread concern among students.

Since the beginning of the last semester, there have been tourists visiting the school to inquire about tuition fees and school life.

After the start of this semester, the number of tourists has increased dramatically, and almost every day there are at least five tour groups, each with twenty or thirty people.

Due to the large number of tourists, the cafeteria became crowded, and students were sometimes unable to even eat in time.

In addition, due to the influx of tourists, the bus stop has also become more crowded, and students are sometimes unable to even squeeze into the bus, resulting in being late for class.

The students expressed their concern and felt that in addition to charging fees for visits, there should be some rules in place to ensure the safety and interests of students.

Due to the frequent arrival and exit of tourists, lectures are interrupted from time to time.

Students said that although the tourists were only staying for a short time, the large number of tourists who continued to pour into the campus caused them a lot of trouble.

The students hope that the university will take measures to control the number of visitors and ensure that the order of the campus and the normal learning of students are not affected.

There was also an increase in free tourists from China, and the university decided to take measures

Recently, Nanyang Technological University has taken a new measure to deal with the surge in the number of visitors on campus.

According to tourism industry insiders, in addition to traditional study tours, NTU and NUS are also popular choices for independent travelers.

The tour guide said that at present, almost all Chinese tour groups ask to visit NTU and NTU.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) issued a written notice to travel agents operating inbound tours in Singapore on Thursday, announcing that an entry fee would be charged to travellers.

The Singapore Tourism Board has also published the notice on its website.

This measure is aimed at controlling the number of visitors and ensuring that order on campus and the normal learning of students are not affected.

However, some students said that the frequent arrival and exit of tourists has caused them a lot of trouble.

Students are concerned that the influx of tourists will interrupt their classroom learning and increase their risk of not catching the bus and missing classes.

Specific measures taken by the school

In order to maintain a safe and academically focused environment on the NTU campus, all travel agents planning to visit the NTU campus will be required to follow the new study tour policy from 1 February 2024.

The key points of the policy are as follows:

  • Pre-application and registration: All travel agents must obtain prior approval from the Nanyang Technological University Activities Office before they can bring a tour to campus. After approval, travel agents are required to register their tour groups and book a suitable time slot for their tour groups in accordance with the visit guidelines provided by the school.
  • Time and number restrictions: All groups are required to strictly adhere to the time slots, group size limits and designated visit areas assigned by the school. A detailed tour guide will be provided upon successful registration.
  • Fee Adjustment: To support campus maintenance and vehicular traffic management, Nanyang Technological University will charge an admission fee. This fee is designed to ensure a sustainable visit experience for every visitor.
  • Code of Conduct and Safety: All visitors must abide by the campus rules and are not allowed to enter no-parking areas or restricted areas. Nanyang Technological University reserves the right to ask visitors to leave the campus if they violate the rules or behave inappropriately. At the same time, travel agencies need to ensure that their partners (e.g. tour vehicle drivers) comply with the traffic control instructions of school staff/security personnel, otherwise they will be liable for the corresponding legal consequences.

NTU has issued a written notice to travel agents operating inbound tours in Singapore on Thursday, February 1, announcing the implementation of a new fee for tourists.

The notice clearly states that NTU will charge an entrance fee to each visitor. The new rules have also been announced by the Singapore Tourism Board on its official website.

At present, at least one travel agency has submitted an application to NTU to enter the campus. In its reply to the travel agency, NTU said that it would charge for each vehicle and asked for payment in advance.

For visitors who plan to visit campus from Feb. 3-5, payment must be completed by 9 p.m. on Feb. 2.

The entrance fee is S$719.40 per mode of transport, which includes administration fees and GST.

In addition, tour groups are required to enter campus within a set time slot, and each group is limited to one hour of visitation.

This new measure is designed to ensure the normal operation of the campus and reduce the impact of visitors on teaching and student activities.

For visitors who want to visit NTU, it is important to understand and follow these new regulations in advance to ensure a smooth trip.

The implementation of this policy aims to ensure order and safety on the NTU campus, to provide a better visitor experience for visitors, and to maintain a normal learning and living environment for the school's teachers and students.

NTU set restrictions, and travel agencies adjusted their visit plans: they visited other universities instead

According to the travel agencies interviewed, only NTU is currently required to register and pay, while NUS has not yet implemented relevant measures.

As a result, travel agents have adjusted their itineraries and will temporarily arrange visits to NUS and Singapore Management University, which were previously less visited.

The University responded that it had noticed a seasonal increase in the number of visitors.

In order to minimise the disruption of teaching and student activities on campus by visitors, NUS will take a number of measures.

NUS emphasises that its campus is open-plan and public spaces are open to the public, but that teaching and research facilities, office areas and campus dormitories are restricted to students and faculty of the University.

It is understood that many well-known universities in the world, such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, also require visitors to make an appointment in advance.

However, Tsinghua only opens its campus on weekends and statutory holidays;

Visits to Peking University and Tsinghua University are free of charge, and any form of paid appointment service is refused.
