The little boy in front of him has eyes swollen like tires, and his weight is three times that of his peers, with more than 200 pounds. Vincent was born in a remote town in Uganda. Before the age of five, he was in good health and often played with other small children. However, once he accidentally broke his leg, and after going to the hospital for treatment, in addition to a fracture in his leg, there was also a rare disease that left doctors helpless. Vincent's parents took him to several major hospitals, but the treatment failed. They could only take him home. Over time, Vincent's legs began to swell, muscle atrophy, hip dislocations, and ankle fractures appeared, and he completely lost the ability to walk. If you want to move elsewhere, you can only rely on the help of your parents. Whenever he saw other children carrying their school bags to school, Vincent would always cast envious eyes, and he hoped that he could recover quickly and return to school.
In 2007, Vincent came to Kampala for treatment with the help of Isaac merchants. However, the results were not satisfactory, and he was diagnosed with elephant disease, a rare parasitic disease. Doctors recommend amputation. Just when Vincent's parents were in a dilemma, Ryan, a professor of medicine at Oxford University, found them. Ryan thinks amputation is too risky.
The swelling of Vincent's legs may be lymphedema, but during the examination, Ryan found that the swollen area was very soft and did not resemble lymphedema at all. He initially judged that this was a rare genetic disorder that could be controlled by removing fat. Before leaving Uganda, Ryan went to Vincent's home and offered a feasible treatment plan. He reassured Vincent not to be discouraged and let his legs move to slow down muscle atrophy.
More than a decade later, Vincent's legs still haven't recovered. Since the death of his parents, the burden of caring for Vincent has fallen on his older brother and sister. If you want to move Vincent, you can't do it alone. As a result, Mary quit her job to take care of Vincent with her brother. However, Mary's approach caused her husband's displeasure. The two often quarrel over this. Eventually, her husband ran away from home and never returned, leaving only Mary and her two children.
To take care of Vincent, Sadie and Mary are both unemployed. With no source of income, their lives are very difficult. Every morning, the two would carry Vincent out into the street to beg. For the family, this approach is really a helpless move.
