As everyone knows, Donner joined the Communist Party of China early in the morning, and his real identity is an underground member of the Communist Party of China.
The old man Xia Qiyan, who was the deputy secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee newspaper "Jiefang Daily", once talked about such a past.
In 1934, Xia Qiyan was admitted to the trainee open recruitment of the China Enterprise Bank, and together with him was admitted to a young man named Ma Jishan, and this Ma Jishan's brother was not a bystander, it was Donner, who was originally named Ma Jiliang.
In order to take care of his younger brother, Donner often visits the bank dormitory, and for this reason, he is also familiar with Xia Qiyan, who lives in the bank dormitory.
According to Xia Qiyan, Ma Jiliang, who goes by the pseudonym Donner, is a progressive young man who had joined the Chinese Communist Youth League at that time and often discussed Marxism with him in the dormitory, while Xia Qiyan was also pursuing progress.
Because of his lofty beliefs, Downer often boldly praised left-wing films in the Shanghai film industry.
However, because of his close relations with the Kuomintang high-ranking officials, no one suspected that Donner was involved with the Communist Party.

One day after Xia Qiyan met Donner, Donner secretly approached him and asked him if he would like to take one in.
Although Donner did not clearly tell Xia Qiyan the identity of this person, only that this person could teach him many revolutionary principles, Xia Qiyan also realized that this person's identity was not simple, and agreed without hesitation.
It was not until he saw this guest that Xia Qiyan knew that this person was Yu Qiyue, an underground member of the CCP, and Donner only called him "Xiaolin", while the pen name he used was "Shi Yuan".
Yu Qiyue lived in Xia Qiyan's home, spending most of his time writing progressive articles, and the rest of the time guiding Xia Qiyan to study Marxist-Leninist theory and embark on the road of revolution.
Donner came back to visit him every once in a while and helped him publish progressive articles under the name "Donner."
Under the influence of Donner and Yu Qiyue, Xia Qiyan joined our party in 1937, and he emphasized that Donner joined the party earlier than him.

After that, Donner hid his identity as an underground member of the CCP, followed the Kuomintang step by step, first to Wuhan and then to Chongqing, and has been doing underground work.
Donner's wife, Ms. Chen Lu, also said that Donner's whereabouts are very secret.
As for where he went and what he did, he did nothing, and Donner never revealed it.
Chen Lu clearly remembers that Donner told her after returning home once that if he was arrested, then when the patrol house found Chen Lu, she said that she and Donner had divorced long ago to avoid being implicated by Donner.
At that time, Chen Lu was still particularly shocked, and did not understand why Donner was worried about being arrested, until the people who patrolled the house really found her, she realized that Donner's identity was not simple, and there was another mystery in making friends with the high-ranking officials of the Kuomintang.
Fortunately, Chen Lu was able to get out according to what Donner had taught her before, and in her later years, Chen Lu learned that her ex-husband Donner was indeed an underground party of the CCP.
After the victory of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Downer returned to Shanghai to become the editor-in-chief of Wen Wei Po.
Just a year later, when the peace talks between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party failed in Nanjing and the CCP delegation headed by Premier Zhou was about to return to Yan'an, Dan Na, who was the editor-in-chief of Wen Wei Po, hurried from Shanghai to Nanjing and said that he would interview Premier Zhou in person.
Donner met with Premier Zhou for only half an hour, and Donner only asked one question:
"Mr. Zhou, when you return to Yan'an, the rupture of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party is inevitable, what will Wen Wei Po do with itself?"
After that, Premier Zhou smiled and replied to him: "Work as usual, adapt to the situation." ”
In the eyes of the KMT leadership at the time, the question asked by Downer was nothing more than an insignificant question, but now it seems to have a lot of meaning.
This time, Donner rushed to meet Premier Zhou not just for an interview, but more like a face-to-face report.
In 1948, Donner secretly returned to Shanghai from Hong Kong and re-founded the closed Wen Wei Po, presumably on a mission.
And with the bright prospects of our party's revolutionary cause, the underground work in charge of Downer also came to an end, and at this time he also had the idea of going abroad.
Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, news suddenly spread in Hong Kong that Donner was going to the United States.
Everyone thought that Donner was obsessed with pursuing reporter Miss Chen Runqiong, and because Miss Chen Runqiong was going to the United States, he followed closely from far away.
In fact, Donner went to the United States and was still burdened with an important job, that is, many senior leaders of the Kuomintang fled overseas at that time, and he went to the United States to continue to do underground work for our party.
In 1949, Donner left Hong Kong for the United States, where he did not return until 1978.

At this time, Donner's identity could not be disclosed, and the central government attached great importance to Donner's return to China and kept it strictly secret.
After returning to China, Donner was able to meet his long-time friend Xia Qiyan, and secretly met several old friends who had not seen him for many years in Shanghai, including Zhao Dan, who had previously held a group wedding with him.
Years later, a photo of Marshal Ye Jianying receiving overseas Chinese was made public, and people were surprised that Marshal Ye Jianying was not meeting someone else, but Jiang Qing's ex-husband Donner, and at the same time gave Donner the note in the photo that he was an overseas Chinese in France.
This photograph was taken in 1978, the year Donner secretly returned to China, when he was received by the central government's super-high standards.
After all, if Donner is just an overseas Chinese in France, then why did Marshal Ye Jianying meet him and let him stand in the center of the photo?

What is more noteworthy is that all of Donner's trips after returning to China were arranged by the Investigation Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
At the same time, when arranging for Xia Qiyan to meet with Donner, the cadres of the CPC Central Committee secretly told him that Donner had joined the party again!
This word "again" directly points out that Donner had joined the Communist Party of China a long time ago, but because he had been engaged in underground work, his identity could not be disclosed, and he was able to join the party again.
For the smooth success of the revolutionary cause on the mainland, as an underground member of the Chinese Communist Party, Downer made many contributions and sacrifices, and he was always tight-lipped about the work he did, and in his later years he wanted to write a memoir but failed to achieve it.
In 1988, Downer died of illness in Paris, France, and his secret as an underground member of the CCP was hidden by his death.
It wasn't until 2012 that Donner's identity was officially revealed:
He was a special member of the Communist Party of China and one of the first intelligence officers of the Ministry of State Security.
