The yellow-bellied horned pheasant is a ground-dwelling resident bird, which has high habitat dependence and poor anti-interference ability. The narrow-range area of the yellow-bellied pheasant is distributed in Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi and other southern provinces, mainly inhabiting subtropical mountain evergreen broad-leaved forests and coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests at altitudes of 600~1800 meters, with a total global population of only about 4000. The breeding rate of the yellow-bellied horned pheasant is very low, and its rarity can be called the "giant panda among birds".

The breeding season for the yellow-bellied pheasant is from March to May each year. Adult male yellow-bellied pheasants make calls of different frequencies and syllables to assert territorial sovereignty and signal "courtship". Once a female is spotted, the male will quickly approach and perform a courtship show, holding his head high and his tail flapping, showing off his gorgeous flesh skirt and horns.

The yellow-bellied horned pheasant is hidden, loves to "hide cats" between mountains and forests, often moves in dense understory shrubs and grasses, and when it finds a danger signal, it lowers its head and shrinks between the grasses.
