author:Deng Haichun

As the most powerful and powerful group in the feudal era, the emperors of ancient China were envied in most cases, after all, they not only had extremely high power, but also had a very high standard of living. However, not all emperors are worthy of envy, and there are many emperors in history who can be described as "miserable". For example, in the last years of the Ming Dynasty, there was an emperor who was imprisoned twice, imprisoned for twenty-three years before and after, but was killed less than two years after ascending the throne, he was the Longwu Emperor Zhu Yujian.

In the 30th year of the Wanli Calendar (1602), Zhu Yujian was born in the Tang Dynasty of Nanyang, which is the area of present-day Nanyang City, Henan Province. In that year, Zhu Yuanzhang, the ming emperor, crowned his twenty-third son Zhu Huan as the first generation of Tang kings, and Zhu Yujian, who was born nearly two hundred years later, was already the twelfth successor to the throne. As the eldest son of The Tang Dynasty's son Zhu Qijian and Yuan's wife Mao Shi, Zhu Yujian seemed to have a bright future, but the tang king at the time, that is, Zhu Shuoxi, the grandfather of Zhu Yujian, was ready to get rid of Zhu Shuyi because he loved the son of the concubine.

In order to make the son of the concubine smoothly become the new son, Zhu Shuoxi ordered that Zhu Qiyu and Zhu Yujian father and son be imprisoned in the palace to be responsible for management and punishment of the personnel of the court, with the intention of starving the two to death. Fortunately, at that time, there was a small official who could not bear it, so he often quietly delivered food, so that Zhu Yujian's father and son survived sixteen years of time. Although his physical freedom was restricted, Zhu Yujian actively defended his ideological freedom, and he studied seriously and studied many Confucian classics.

In the second year of Chongzhen (1629), the son of the previously mentioned concubine of Zhu Shuosheng completely lost patience and poisoned Zhu Shuyu to death. However, at this time, Zhu Shuoxi was worried that the imperial court would pursue the mysterious death of Shizi after the son of his concubine was established, so he made Zhu Yujian a grandson. In the same year, the old Tang king Zhu Shuoxi died, and Zhu Yujian officially succeeded to the throne in the fifth year of Chongzhen (1632) and became the new tang king. However, this is only the beginning of a new chapter in the tragedy of his life.

In the ninth year of Chongzhen (1636), Zhu Yujian ordered the killing of Zhu Qizu and Zhu Qizun's two uncles in order to avenge his poisoned father. A month later, the Qing army marched directly into the capital, and Zhu Yujian, who was the king of the domain, wrote a letter to the king of Qin, and after being rejected, he still led more than a thousand guards of the palace all the way north. In the end, under the orders of the Chongzhen Emperor, Zhu Yujian finally gave up the King of Qin and returned to Nanyang with a force that had only fought a few battles with the peasant army.

In the Ming Dynasty, it was taboo for the king of the clan to enter Beijing without an edict, not to mention that Zhu Yujian intended to directly lead the army into Beijing. Therefore, the enraged Chongzhen Emperor ordered zhu Yujian to be deposed as a Shuren in November of that year and imprisoned in a large prison in Fengyang, the ancestral capital of the imperial family. After seven years of bullying and torture, Zhu Yujian finally ushered in a turning point in his life - after the fall of the Ming Dynasty and the hanging of the Chongzhen Emperor, he was released by the newly established Hongguang regime and crowned as the King of Nanyang.

However, Zhu Yujian, who had become the King of Nanyang, was immediately jealous by the Hongguang Emperor and was asked to go to Pingle Province, Guangxi, which is now southern Guilin, Guangxi. In May of the following year, Zhu Yujian, who had not been able to leave for Pingle due to illness, finally set out, but when he arrived in Suzhou, he learned that the Hongguang regime had been destroyed. So he turned to Zhejiang, and after arriving in Hangzhou, he was escorted to Fujian by Zheng Hongkui, the commander-in-chief of Zhenjiang.

However, as soon as Zhu Yujian arrived in Quzhou, he learned that Zhu Changshu, who had been established as a prisoner, had surrendered to the Qing army by sacrificing Hangzhou. Under the respect of many Southern Ming courtiers, Zhu Yujian was proclaimed the new overseer, and he also reviewed the army and issued an oath in Quzhou to show his determination to fight against the Qing. Despite the impassioned vows, Zhu Yujian, who was difficult to contend with the Qing army, soon went to Fuzhou, Fujian Province, where he proclaimed himself emperor and Jianyuan Longwu.

Objectively speaking, Zhu Yujian was an emperor with ambitions and certain abilities, but he was always overtaken by the Zheng family and had no chance to show his fists. Soon after, the anti-Qing struggle broke out again in Zhejiang, which had already fallen, and Zhu Yihai, the king of Lu, was supported by the local rebel army as a prisoner of state, using the era name "Hongguang". Under the severe situation of the anti-Qing Resistance, the two forces of Longwu and Luwang did not cooperate with each other, but fought separately, and the result was naturally that both sides were defeated.

In the second year of Longwu (1646), King Lu was defeated by the Qing army and forced to take refuge at sea, while Zhu Yujian was hampered by the Zheng family. In August, the Qing army invaded Xianxia Pass, which was in the throat of Min, and Zhu Yujian fled to Tingzhou, where he was martyred. As for the cause of Zhu Yujian's death, various historical sources are various, some saying that he was killed by Qing soldiers, some saying that he committed suicide by throwing himself into the water, and others saying that he died of hunger strike after being captured.

In general, Zhu Yujian, who had only been emperor for less than two years, was born in a turbulent era and had a dangerous identity. He wants to save Jiang Shan Sheji, but Zheng Zhilong, who regards him as a puppet, only wants to use his royal status to make a profit for himself. In the end, Zhu Yujian failed to realize any of his ambitions, and his resistance was nothing more than a praying mantis arm as a car in the eyes of the Qing army. Even so, his dedication and heroism still deserve the respect of future generations. In addition, it is worth mentioning that it was he who gave Zheng Chenggong the surname of the country, and Zheng Chenggong did not live up to Zhu Yujian's trust and regarded the resistance to the Qing as a lifelong cause.
