Unlike other masters, Mies did not receive a more formal education in architecture, and even before he had a formal university diploma, he had already started his own architectural design career, and his understanding of architecture was more in practice and the actual experience of architecture.
Born in Aachen, Germany in 1886, Mies died in Chicago, USA, and received numerous awards in his lifetime, including the Friedensklassedes Ordens Tourle Mérite in 1957, the Royal Architectural Council Gold Medal in 1959, the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1960, the Berlin Art Prize in 1961, the Freedom Representative Medal in 1963, and the German Federal Gold Medal in 1966.
His design philosophy is also "less is more", and he once said to his students, "I hope you can understand that architecture has nothing to do with the creation of form". Through Mies's lifelong practice, he laid a clear modernist architectural style, and the glass curtain wall style architecture that can be found everywhere today is largely developed by his designs.
One of Mies's most famous works, the German Pavilion in Barcelona at the 1929 World's Fair, is a perfect practice, which does not have any superfluous things attached to the building, no cluttered decorations, no out-of-the-box changes, no strange ornaments, just the light and transparent building itself and its continuous circulation space inside and out.
