Today is Singapore's public holiday, Vesak Day. As a first time enjoy this muscle, learn about what Vesak is.

Vesak day is one of the most important Buddhist festivals. It is also known as Wesak or Buddha Day. It was a celebration of the Buddha's birthday and, for some Buddhists, also marked his enlightenment (he discovered the meaning of life). It was also a moment to reflect on his teachings and what it meant to be a Buddhist.

I. The story of Vesak Day

Most Buddhists believe in the teachings of a man named Shakyamuni (also known as Buddha). It is said that Shakyamuni was born in present-day Nepal in the 5th century BC, and he is considered a prince born into a wealthy family. Shakyamuni realized that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness, so he became a homeless saint, traveling around to learn more about the world and seeing the suffering in the world.

During his travels, after six years of study and meditation, he awakened spiritually and reached the goal of finding the meaning of life. This is called enlightenment. At this time, he became a Buddha and spent the rest of his life teaching his followers about his experiences. Buddha is a title, not a name, meaning an awakened person or an enlightened one.

2. What day is Vesak Day?

The date of Vesak changes every year as it is held on the first full moon of the May month of the traditional lunar calendar, usually in May or early June

How is Vesak celebrated?

Every Buddhist culture celebrates the day in its own traditional way, but it is celebrated in many different countries and regions, including India, Thailand, and Asian countries such as the north and south of Korea.

Many Buddhists visit local temples, and some may even stay in temples throughout the day and night of the full moon. Many would do good deeds, engage in chanting and meditation, reflect on the Buddha's teachings, bring offerings to temples, and share food with others. During this time, candles are also lit to pray.
