Due to the environment, Zhong Wei was eventually driven out of the army and came to work in the local area, becoming a deputy director of the Agricultural Department.

Zhong Wei's grandson Zhong Xinsheng said in an interview: Although my grandfather was a general, our family did not touch his light and lived on their own. Once, Zhong Wei's son found his father and wanted to find a better errand, and it was not a matter of farming at home all the time.
Relics of Zhong Wei

Zhong Wei left no relics before his death, and all his belongings were a box containing some personal items, plus some medals and military supplies.
Zhong Wei left a suicide note, the content is very touching:
"Dear party, I don't have to pay me any salary after I die, my sons can live, I don't owe any accounts before I die, the TV sets and refrigerators in my home are all handed over to the party as party fees, there is no need to give me a memorial service and a farewell before the spirit, and scatter my ashes in the places where I have fought."
