Photo News: "Famous Peking Opera Artists on Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait Award in the United States"
The American Chinese Art Association and the Lincoln Center for the Arts in New York presented the "Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award" to Mr. Zhang Junqiu and Ms. Gu Zhengqiu (Taiwan), famous Peking Opera artists on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Ms. Gu Zhengqiu studied under Mr. Zhang Junqiu 40 years ago, and this is a group photo of the teacher and student duo with Ms. Campaier, who presented them with the award on behalf of New York City Mayor Dinkins.

Xuehao and Xuezhi said that they also often sat on the small wooden bench backstage to watch the play. Xuemin was admitted to a drama school when he was less than 10 years old, and Xue Yiqi who appeared on stage at the age of 7 to perform "Sanniang Godson". Later, all seven of Mr. Zhang's children were admitted to the Beijing Opera School, and Xuehao was admitted to the Chinese Opera School.
Xuezhi performed "Lin Chong Night Running" for the first time on stage three months after being admitted to the drama school, almost the whole family went to the theater and sat in a large row, and Mr. Zhang specially invited Xia Meng from Hong Kong to watch the play. That day was a matinee show, Mr. Zhang had a night play should rest at home, but he couldn't sleep, when he arrived at the theater, he wanted to watch the play, but when he thought of an 11-year-old child singing a big martial arts opera, and he was nervous for his son, he hid behind a big pillar to peek at it. Seeing the tension, he also sweated.
After learning from Mr. Ma Lianliang, people said that he was like "growing up in the Ma family", and often studied opera until midnight before borrowing a bicycle to return to the troupe. Xuehai and Xuejin are twins, but Xuehai worshiped under Mr. Zhou Xinfang and went to Shanghai to learn Qi art alone. In 1954, the Beijing Opera School recognized the five good students for the first time, and the first person to receive the award on stage was Zhang Xuejin. When President Hao Shouchen told Mr. Zhang Junqiu the good news, Mr. Zhang couldn't help but be overjoyed and immediately rewarded Xuejin with a "crested" bicycle.
Zhang Junqiu advocated learning from all his strengths in art, eclectic, and his children also developed freely in art, and in his family there were not only old students, young students, martial artists, flower faces, Qing Yi, Hua Dan, and Lao Dan, but also the Tan faction, the Qi faction, the Ma faction, the Qiu faction, and the Li (Duokui) faction, plus the three nephews of Zhang Menben and Xue Bangzi, acting in a big drama can also be said to have a neat lineup and each with its own characteristics.
In the performance congratulating Mr. Zhang Junqiu on his 60-year artistic career, the big axis play is "Dragon and Phoenix Chengxiang" jointly performed by his whole family, Xuejin, Xuehai, Xueji, Xuehao, Xuezhi, Xuejiang, Xuejiang, Xuemin, Xuehua, Xueling, as well as the fifth daughter-in-law Zhang Xin and the eldest son-in-law Wang Youtong.
