"Holding the purpose, improving virtue, and loving the teachers and friends" is to have ideals, morality, and tree conduct in today's words, and the "purpose" of which refers to the real transformation of Peking University into a place for governance. This is Mr. Cai Yuanpei as the president of the three requirements for young students, seemingly simple but each is related to the future fate of Peking University.

New culture and new ideas originated in Peking University
In his youth, Cai Yuanpei successively accepted the Chinese and Western learning system, took the imperial examination, studied German in Berlin, and studied at the University of Leipzig. During this period, Cai Yuanpei's "History of Chinese Ethics" and the translation of "Principles of Ethics" (Written by Paul Sheng), etc., as school textbooks, all had a certain influence.
The combination of Chinese and Western learning experience and knowledge structure made Cai Yuanpei firmly believe that the integration of Eastern and Western cultures was the trend of the times, which may also be the root of his later efforts to promote new cultures.

In the winter of 1911, Cai Yuanpei returned to China and subsequently served as the first director of education in the Republic of China. In the six years from 1917 to the beginning of 1923, Cai Yuanpei served as the president of Peking University, and the atmosphere of Peking University began to shift, and new culture and new ideas began to emerge here.
