Chinese chips are disliked? Russia's independent production of 90nm SIM cards is just the beginning

author:Moscow onion heads

The Russian state-owned Mikron will produce SIM card chips, and Russian telecommunications operators are already testing its software. The chip will be produced according to the topology standards of 180 nm and 90 nm.

In the face of the multifaceted economic war launched by the West, Russia must not only ensure sovereignty, but also obtain basic security. The goose has noticed that it is particularly vulnerable in the civilian high-tech sector.

In the field of security, the big goose does not dare to rely on China. The West is fiercely competing with China in the high-tech sector. The United States and other Western countries have blacklisted a number of Chinese chip companies. The goose is now fully aware of the seriousness of the problem and is working in this direction.

Mikron plans to mass-produce SIM chips next year. Although the production capacity is not yet enough to meet the demand, the goose is still very proud: at least in principle, to deal with the risk of stopping the provision of communication service products to the outside world.

Interestingly, the work did not begin "suddenly". The project has been under development since 2013. However, progress has been very slow. It was only recently that the determination of the Goose Digital Development Department brought the project to life.

Russian telecom operators buy SIM cards from Western manufacturers until 2022. Now they turn their attention to the "Chinese", but Chinese products are 2-3 times more expensive than European ones. When the chip was sold, there was dumping again.

Goose chipmakers have not stood idly by and have sought protection from fierce competition from Chinese rivals. They demanded tariffs on the import of smart cards (sim, bank and transport). This tax rate is now zero, while the average tax rate for components is 7 percent. Russia's domestic chip companies are in a situation of obvious losses. Based on this, they even began to discuss the possibility of producing Mir payment system cards outside Russia. This is clearly unconscionable.

At present, most Russian banks buy cards from domestic companies. For example, Post-Bank and Sberbank

Order a bank card from the aforementioned Mikron company.

In the field of cellular communications, the situation is much more complicated. Russia's dependence on foreign supplies is almost 100 percent. Yes, on the surface, many SIM cards are issued by Novacard, Altair, and Eastkompis. However, the core parts of these SIM cards need to be imported.

If all SIM cards are to be replaced by Russian production, then Russian mobile operators will face a lot of problems, the future workload will be huge, and may increase the burden on consumers.

The goose now understands that it is too late to hold accountable for today's situation. The so-called "buying is better than building" has delayed the revitalization of the country, and in the field of core technology, it is necessary to concentrate as much as possible on creating the goose's own things, rather than blindly turning to the East. Without your own technology, the results will only be worse, the product will only be more expensive, and there may even be no choice.
